Guest guest
Had my operation in April 2007 to remove the c-toma, along with two hearing bones. At the time of my surgery the doctor replaced the bones with the prothesis. Question for you, do you know if any of your hearing bones were removed? In most instances, reconstruction of the hearing bones doesn't occur until about 4-6 months from removal. But this is a doctor's choice. As for me, my hearing has been restored to about 85-90% normal. A tremendous difference over the healing months. Nate.... Hearing after Operation Hi All,I had a Cholesteatoma removed 3 1/2 weeks back and yesterday i went back to Hospital to have the packing removed.I have no hearing improvement and was wondering if people have had an increase in their hearing levels? Could the ear still be healing and potentially increase hearing over time or am i stuck with what i have now.I know the opertaion is to remove the tumour, not increase hearing, but was hoping for an increase.Peoples thoughts/experience s please Much loveM Never miss a thing. Guest guest
Hello, From my experience: I think the main question is whether you still have the bones intact? If so, your hearing should improve as the swelling reduces. If not, you will probably not notice a large increase in hearing, but you may have some. Guest guest
I was C-toma re-operated in February 07 (a first operation was in 1986), with prothesis sostitution of bones, I am still recovering the hearing.I was tested for hearing two months after operation, the increase of hearing was negligible. So, let the time heal your ear!best whishesBruno DoreItaly2007/12/19, bromleykebab <bromleykebab@... >: Hi All, I had a Cholesteatoma removed 3 1/2 weeks back and yesterday i went back to Hospital to have the packing removed. Guest guest
Nate, How long did it take you to get this amount back from your April surgery? Guest guest
yes! I think so!previously I was almost deaf by the dx ear, unable to hear the human voice. Now I can hear distinctly by two ears, and able to locate where the voice come from. Previously I had to move the head to present the sx ear to the speaker. Obviously the sound is not clear as from the good hear, but the improvement is great. I could appreciate the amelioration months after the surgery.best wishesBruno 2007/12/19, amber krasny <am81576@...>: Hi, What is the longest it took anyone on this board to regain their highest hearing level after surgery? Guest guest
Amber, My hearing really started to come back around the 2 month mark. Its gradual mind you, not something that one night after sleeping its back. But it also depends on how bad the infection was to damage your hearing, and the experience your surgeon has. Nate... If the conduction mechanism - the ossicles - are damaged or missing then you won't get any improvement. Have you not had a post operation hearing test yet? The chart will tell you what your hearing level is. Normally they test you for air conduction (through your ear) and bone conduction (through your skull). If you get a good score for bone conduction and low score for air conduction (which is what you'd expect with ctoma)then it means your nerve hearing is good and middle ear is damaged. If your nerve hearing is good then you can expect to get a good deal of your hearing back whenever they get around to doing a reconstruction.
