My son had vertigo after each surgery. The effects on him were exactly as you described. The doctor said that we have floating crystals in our middle ear that need to settle back into their natural state after being disrupted during surgery. His doctor had him lay flat with his head on a pillow for 48 hours, getting up only if necessary.

Worked everytime!!

When I had my surgery three years ago and the doc removed the packing,I didn't have vertigo in the sense that the room was spinning rapidly, but still everything was off kilter. My body acted like I was drunk.Putting one foot in front of the other was definitely a chore. Thisdidn't happen in the 4 previous surgeries (all before age 20).I'm getting the packing out for my recent surgery on Monday. I cannotwait. Am wondering if this "vertigo" thing will happen again.I like to hear others' experiences.Connie

After my first cholesteatoma was removed I had the same vertigo as

you described, I was 8 years old.

After the 3rd mastoid surgery (15 years old), to open the cavity, in

the hope to stop the secondary infections (it did work), I was left

with unpredictable vertigo and 18 years later I still get dizzy when

climbing steps or ladders, and on occasion if I move fast and even

when lying in bed.

My guess is there is damage around the balance canal? The doctors

however don't think this should happen.
