Guest guest
Peggy, good to hear from you and know that you are recovering. I am so sorry about the spasms, but it does help to know they are normal and that better days are ahead. I am recovering from my surgery as well (not related to Achalasia) but I was expecting to bounce back a lot faster and know the "feeling sorry for myself" thing when I didn't. I had some pains like I'd never experienced before and since the doctor was not sure from the way I described them, I had to go in for him to check just to tell me all was normal. Even though he had told me I'd have 6 weeks of recovery time, I expected 3 at the most. I usually bounce back a lot faster. Maybe my age has something to do with it, but I'd like to think that is not true. Rest, take it easy and be sure to let your doctor know to warn his next patient about the spasms. We have to train them you know. I too have thought so much about Joan lately and I also miss her very much. I wonder if there will ever be a time that I don't think of her daily. Please take care....am looking forward to the time when you can tell us how good you feel. Hugs Maggie Alabama
Guest guest
Peggy, It's so good to hear that your recovery is coming along! I miss dear Joan, too. I'm sorry to hear about your spasms, though. I sure hope that gets better. Jan from Northern KY

Guest guest
Dear Peggy, I am so happy you are recovering so well from your surgery...well except for the spasms. : ( I was fortuntate not to have spasms post myotomy and have often wondered why some of us have them and some of us don't. I had them very bad in the beginning stages of my achalasia and then they went away, but then they came back about 6 months after having surgery! We are all just very different! You are very lucky to have had Sandy and the LA group by your side...she is a very special (and funny) lady! Sorry I couldn't be there...Maybe I will be able to come to the next get-together! I'm almost an LA'er now! LOL I have been thinking of and missing Joan all weekend as well...maybe she is missing us too. My heart and my prayers go out to her family...especially her husband who must be missing her terribly. Hugs, Sandi in No CA > Hi everyone: > > I am on my last day of the first week after surgery. Guest guest
Hi Peggy, thanks for sharing your update. You really are about and about a lot faster than I was. I think after my surgery I was in bed a lot more at first. I find it interesting to learn about what you are going through, having had surgery with the VATS way, as compared to the laparascopic way I had it with a nissen fundoplication wrap. Sorry to hear about your spasms. Hope they go away. I wonder if you had more liquids, then wait a couple more days for the pureed foods, if it would help diminish the spasms until your esophagus heals a little more from the surgery. About the pain in the right shoulder, that is very common for people who have just had surgery for achalasia. I read about it and was told about it before I had my surgery. It should only be short term. I think it's because they pump your insides or stomach with gas to be able to go inside your esophagus. I'm not explaining this very well, but the doctors told me about it beforehand. About the dizziness, I had dizziness, too. For about two weeks, then things got better. But you sure are a lot more active than I was right after the surgery. For some reason I couldn't even read. I think it was because of my dizziness. As the days go on it will get better. You're going through some of the toughest parts, the surgery and first days after. We here to support you! Thinking of you. in Covina :)Peggy Cordero <pegster@...> wrote: Hi everyone:I am on my last day of the first week after surgery. Thanks also to my dear friend Sandy and all the LA-based achalasians who have provided so much personalized support. This group has truly meant the difference between poor care and excellent outcome. Guest guest
Peggy, great to hear from you, but sorry to hear about the spasms. Have you talked to your doctor about trying a Calcium Channel Blocker (or similar) drug to stop a spasm in process, or maybe a low-dose antidepressant drug to try to prevent them from starting in the first place? I hope you find something that works for you SOON!Debbi in Michigan
Guest guest
Good news from yesterday -- only one baby spasm all day and off my pain medication last night. I take 37 mg Zoloft (subclinical dosage) to support my depression, interestingly, I had more spasms after going back on an anti- depressant before surgery. Go figure. I took CCBs a year before surgery and have not resumed after (hmmmm, do I detect a link here?) because I am swallowing so well. My hope is that my spasms will diminish as I heal -- I plan to take advice of going really slowly with solids as well as activity to get some more healing behind me. I see Dr. Fuller on Friday for post-op. Plan to give him a big hug! It is so terrific to read all the support from the board -- people have talked about how touching it has been for them -- it has been very moving for me as well. Thanks everyone! I managed to duplicate the flavor of the chicken broth in Mexico...night before last...but then I was up all night with diahhrea and terrible gas. I think it was from boiling that celery in there...but it sure tasted good. (Yes, of course I strained it out!) It was made from boiled chicken, not boullion, and that sometimes does give me gas anyway...so I don't know for sure. I know I AM sticking with the broth from the vegetable beef soup I made last night (YUM) or regular boullion. I did freeze the rest of the home made chicken broth and will try it again later, or use it to make gravy. My biggest problem has been "how do I get my pills down crushed without gagging from the taste" and I found...if I make jello...and use it while it is warm to dissolve my crushed pills, they go down pretty smooth and a second shot of warm jello puts them thru the stoma where they can do their job. I still have to take pain pills for my leg sometimes...and those are big "dry" pills. This worked great last night and if I need one tonight I know what to do! Guest guest
The following is cut and pasted right out of the patient information guide provided by Nina to me via email. Day before Surgery: Diet and Medications. Do not eat or drink anything after 10:00 pm except your medications with a sip of water. This guide also refers you to obesityhelp.com in which it talks about the post-operative diet restrictions, i.e . bread, dry meats such as pork, chicken and turkey. It also discusses high carb food items like popcorn, bread, hostess ding-dongs. You get the picture. Additionally, the issue of eating several smaller meals at closer intervals is discussed. Also this website and many others explain the benefits of eating smaller meals than three larger ones. http://www.women4fitness.com/forums/printthread.php?t=18 I hope all of you are doing as much research and educating yourselves as much as possible so you can have a long, healthy and happy life with your loved ones and they can have you! Guest guest
Yes, no eating or drinking after 10pm. If you look in the files section on this group site, you will find Dr. Aceves post op diet. You will get a paper version of it after your surgery. It is always best to stick with your surgeons instructions. Every surgeon is different, and there are a lot of "post op diets" out on the web, including on OH, and other places. They are all different, so that is why it is best to listen to the surgeon (in our case, Dr. Aceves). Links are included in the patient guide as informational only. Now on the lighter side....popcorn is not on the diet. After 7 weeks, you are off the "post op diet" and on your own to make the right food decisions. Some decide to stay on a "diet" like atkins, some decide to eat sensibly, protein first, veggie, then a little starch. Some just eat like they normally did but less of it. I quit smoking, quit drinking soda, quit eating sugar......DON'T TAKE MY POPCORN!! LOL It is one of the only things I allow myself. It does not get stuck, it is low in calorie compared to other things I could be eating (chips, candy, etc) and the reason you can eat more of it is because condensed and chewed, it ends up to be nothing in your pouch. I am not condoning anyone but myself eating popcorn. I don't even know Dr. Aceves thoughts on it. (Did I ever ask Nina?) I just know it is my one and only pleasure and I am not giving it up (picture me guarding my popcorn with my life LOL). Call me a rebel.... M.
