Guest guest
Hi Just a quick note; I mentioned in a previous post that I have just had surgery for the implant of the titanium BAHA fixture, but have yet to actually try the BAHA, though I tested the headband, which was wicked!! I have my appointment in March next year to get the sound processor and I can't wait! There is a BAHA group on , the messages of which you may find useful to read - they should answer any questions you may have regarding the BAHA. However, I'm sure there are some members of this group, who have experience of Cholesteatoma and who also have a BAHA, and who maybe able to help regarding the Cholesteatoma. Kazz xx -----Original Message-----From: john.bailey@... [mailto:john.bailey@...]Sent: 27 November 2003 09:53cholesteatoma Subject: Hearing Aids Hi Everyone, I don't post often, although I do try hard to read all the digests. Reading the current thread about hearing aids though, I feel I really must throw in my tuppence-worth ! I have had an aid for around 6 years now, both before and after my operation. It has been moved around from one ear to the other according to my ENT's whim, but it has been a great help regardless of which ear I've worn it in. My hearing loss is not dreadful, so I can and do manage without it at certain times, but it's more or less essential to wear it during office hours (unless I want to ignore what's going on around me !) I do find though that wearing the aid makes my ear(s) very wet, and I have had several infections as a result of wearing it even though I do clean the mould diligently. In fact, to be perfectly honest, I've had more aggravation from the hearing aid than I did from the C-toma, if you can believe that. MY ENT is aware of this, and he has suggested that if I continue to have problems he will consider giving me a BAHA (bone-anchored hearing aid.) Having had C-toma surgeries, the thought of having a small titanium post implanted doesn't exactly make me tremble with fear. However I would be interested to hear if any of the group have experience of BAHAs any how you have got along with them ?? It does seem that in-the-ear aids aren't really for me in the long term, and I'd like to consider all alternatives ! Thanks, Milton Keynes, UK

Old age and beer are playing games with my memory once again ! I wasn't aware that there was a separate BAHA group, nor had I thought to search for it. But I will certainly have a look now - thanks for the information ! , Milton Keynes, UK
Guest guest
Hello to all! Went to the doctor yesterday and it is now okay for me to get a hearing aid. For anyone in the group who wears hearing aids what is the very best one? My insurance does not cover hearing aids so I will be paying out of my pocket - the doctor showed me a hearing aid yesterday that was about $4,500 she said it is the best (not sure what the brand was) - I went on the internet looking for hearing aids and the one she showed me looked somewhat like the Siemens Centra Active and it looks as if I could buy one for approximately $2,000 (half the price). Need some hearing aid expert advice. Thanks in advance for whatever info you could share.
Guest guest
Don't be a afraid to shop around, mine cost me 2K in 2004 and the a dual digital. The rpice rang at that time was $1000 to $5000. My ins did not pay for it so I had to dig for it...some Ear Doc also sell them for extra profit. Get from the Doc what he feels will meet your needs then shop it around and go back with your best price. Odds are will meet it... There is a large mark up on these items... Guest guest
I am wondering about hearing aids because Chloe has had complete conductive hearing loss for most of the last three years. After the last surgery, where there was so much regrowth, the Dr. mentioned that we should consider a hearing aid, but when she had her audiology exam, the audiologist said that hearing aids wouldn't help her and that we should try an FM system instead (which is really only appropriate in the classroom setting). She said, and others have said this before, that all you need to hear is one ear, and she won't need an aid unless this becomes her only hearing ear. It seems like some of you are aiding just one ear. Am I doing right by Chloe not to pursue this? Guest guest
For hearing aid choice I was referred by my doctor to an audiologist. The audiologist should help you make a choice like that. We'll all have wildly varying needs in that regard. I started with Siemens In The Canal aids and they helped, but were inadequate for my needs. I'm on my second round of aids (the plastic shells cracked at the 7.5 year point) now. I purchased a Widex élan flash Behind The Ear aid ($1,600) based on my audiologist's recommendation. It's much more powerful than my old In The Canal aid. It's not the fanciest aid on the market, but my audiologist felt that spending more wouldn't gain me any additional advantage. If your employer has a medical savings account plan, I'd recommend arranging to purchase the aid via that. I get a zero interest loan and have the amount payroll deducted for the year. The money is withheld before taxes. Every little bit helps. My left one was a bit of an emergency, so I couldn't plan for it, but I'm buying my right one soon under this plan. All the best, Matt Captain Definder wrote: > Hello to all! Went to the doctor yesterday and it is now okay for me > to get a hearing aid. Guest guest
Personally, for someone that is going to be doing more than sitting around in a rocking chair, being able to hear out of BOTH ears is precious. Anyone that tells you different hasn't tried getting through life on one ear for a while. For one thing, safety is a big concern. If there is enough of a hearing loss that the person can't hear much at all out of one of their ears, then they won't be able to tell which direction sound is coming from. Chloe needs to live life to the fullest and to do that she should be hearing as well as she can out of both ears. The FM system seems like a great idea, but it's not going to help Chloe much outside of that room. Maybe some of these audiologists need to walk around for a few days with one of their ears blocked off ... I'll bet they never recommend 'doing fine on one aid again!' Guest guest
Our 9 year old daughter has had a hearing aid for the past 2 weeks after having a radical mastoidectomy last January. And I am amazed how much this aid has helped her. At first everything was very loud, she even put her hands over her ears when the water ran from the sink. It took a couple days to get used to. Her hearing has improved dramatically.I also was told repeatedly by the doctors that one hearing ear is enough ...please don't believe this. Last night our daughter said " It's too bad the doctors didn't know about hearing aids so I wouldn't have had to have all those surgeries. " We went to an audiologist at the University of Michigan and she ordered the aid from HEARUSA which is a national franchise. Here is our info: The manufacturer is Oticon and the aid is called Tego, it is a digital aid and cost $785.00. It fits behind the ear and I was told the behind the ears are the most powerful aids. I was pleasantly surprised by the small slender size and you are able to pick the color too. There is a volume control, and an easy to push button on the aid that enables the user to, 1,be able to pick up sounds in a crowd, 2, be able to hear a small group and 3 for use on the telephone. The hearing aid came with a small stuffed animal that wears hearing aids, a book , t shirt, batteries and several manuals for personal use and parent/child instruction. This aid can also be used with an FM system. I hope this information was helpful. And to anyone who is thinking of purchasing a hearing aid for yourself or your child, please, don't hesitate. You will not regret it. Cheryl > > Hello to all! Went to the doctor yesterday and it is now okay for me to get a hearing aid. For anyone in the group who wears hearing aids what is the very best one? Guest guest
Matt, I totally agree - I only have one ear at this time and am an active person - if you can't hear out of one ear and a hearing aid will help - get it. My husband is not crazy about the idea of me wearing a hearing aid, however, this is what I said to his response (he wears glass he has very bad vision) - if you need glasses because you have really bad vision in one eye and can't see properly do you get a pair to help your vision or just stay semi blind in one eye? Guest guest
I have heard if you have a hole in your eardrum you can't wear a hearing aid - but not sure where I got that info from. The audiologist also said yesterday that it is best to wait on getting a hearing aid if you will have another surgery soon - because the ear changes shape after surgery and hearing aids are molded to fit each individual ear - so if you did get the hearing aid and then had surgery you would possible have to have your hearing aid mold redone. My husband noticed on some of the higher dollar hearing aids that they appear to fit down in any ear canal and do not need a mold (not sure about this just yet). Guest guest
Chloe is due for another surgery in about four and a half months, probably a CWD this time, which I know will greatly change the anatomy of her ear, so it might be better to wait the few months, if it will just need to be redone anyway. Are the BTE aids still molded into the canal shape? She has a tube, no perforation right now, although, she has a large retraction pocket that is growing larger almost daily. I have decided that the wait between surgeries is a little like driving home from Florida to New England on a spare tire. It'll probably be fine, but things could go wrong anytime. I'm not usually such a pessimist! Thank you very much for the input about the only one hearing ear theaory. As I have good hearing, I need the experience of others to help me understand what will be best for Chloe! Guest guest
Some of the newer BTE aids simply have a skinny tube that is anchored in the ear canal with a soft rubbery plastic. So, it allows for air flow as well as differences in shape of the canal. I just had a six-month checkup yesterday morning and although there was a bit of fluid in my left ear, we've moved to 9 months between visits. Guest guest
Right there with you. I have no bones in one ear and have to keep a tube in the other to be able to hear. I don't know what to call it, but I have no " direction perception " . HEHE. It is tough. It's not so great on the neck either when you have to cock your head sideways when someone is talking from the wrong side. Friends learn real quick which side they would walk on. > > Matt, > > I totally agree - I only have one ear at this time and am an active person - if you can't hear out of one ear and a hearing aid will help - get it. My husband is not crazy about the idea of me wearing a hearing aid, however, this is what I said to his response (he wears glass he has very bad vision) - if you need glasses because you have really bad vision in one eye and can't see properly do you get a pair to help your vision or just stay semi blind in one eye? > > > > > > > ________________________________ > From:
Guest guest
So I took all the information that I got from all of you about hearing aids to our Dr. yesterday. He is the one who originally started the dialogue about a hearing aid since it may be awhile before we rebuild again. He let me go through all my reasons why I thought Chloe would benefit before he told me he agreed already. LOL! It was good, regardless, to sort out whether this would be helpful. Anyway, the audiology dept. wouldn't even talk to me about hearing aids before, so you can imagine my surprise when they called today to scedule Chloe's consult for a hearing aid! Thanks for all the input! It really helped me get a glimpse of what she's missing! Guest guest
, I am going to be getting a hearing aid very soon for myself. After going to the audiology dept. and discovering how expensive the hearing aid was I have been searching on the internet and discovered how hearing aids are a highly marked up - by purchasing it over the internet I will save 50% (the hearing aid I am getting was $4,500 at the audiology dept. and $2,000 on the internet) - My insurance does not cover hearing aids so this is the route I am going to take - www.lloydshearingaid.com is where I will be purchasing it from - they did inform me to go locally to get the mold made since I have had surgery on my ear I will need to make sure after the impression that my canal is all cleared (apparently they have a kit for people to make their own ear molds - I will not be trying that) - there will be a small cost for the mold but looks like I will still be saving a lot of money. I had a hearing test last week so they asked that I forward the results to them and they will adjust the hearing aid accordingly - he said the hearing aid will last for many years. Have a great day! Guest guest
That's great info. Chloe has full coverage as a child under our plan with prior authorization, so I have my fingers crossed that it will all be covered. Of course, the insurance won't likely see that markup! At any rate, the surgeon got this ball rolling, so I'm going to take her to the consult and get the information. This is very new to me, since we were not even considering this a few weeks ago! Guest guest
, Both of these look exactly like the way mine is designed. There is no ear mold, just a soft rubber thingey (I know - really technical Matt!) that anchors the thin plastic tube in your ear canal without blocking off the whole ear canal with a mold. I have one of these and then I still have some junky old underperforming In The Canal aid in my right ear that I hope to replace soon. My aid is a Widex élan Flash. I'm flabbergasted that even though this is a BTE, it seems to stay in place better than my old ITE aids! My only grumble is that my glasses and my hearing aid are vying for space behind my ear. I need to have my eyes checked anyway, so I may go with a different style that avoids the issue. I do have a minor annoyance that chewing seems to make the little rubber thingey ride out of my ear canal (and also teeth grinding in tense business meetings). Also, most of these can come in a variety of colors so that you can partially satisfy any bling thing you might have ... but then you might have a clothing clash I reckon ... Guest guest
Dear all, Hearing aids are much more affordable in Malaysia even though I still think the retailers are marking up a huge chunk. You can get a digital ITE hearing aid at around RM5,000 that is USD1,400. Chloe just got glasses this week, and I went with a slender metalframe hoping that she would not have that problem! I guess we'll see! On 2/4/09,
