Guest guest
Hi Jacqie, I am 43 yrs old and have had numerous surgeries for c-toma ( both ears ) since age 8. The last c-toma surgery was at age 39 and I was back to work in 3 days. I think recovery was quicker as a child but I haven't had much problem as an adult either. I had very little pain afterwards and I did not personally have problems with dizziness or balance issues. Hope this helps. ilona jmapenguin@... wrote: I just found out I have to have a Ctoma removed and am scheduled for surgery in April. I don't know much about this and after reading some postings I was wondering if anyone else out there has had this surgery as an adult. I see alot of children having this surgery. Is the recovery as easy for someone older? My Dr said I could be back to work in 5 days, is that really the case? Anything you could tell me about this surgery for an adult would be terrific.Jacqie
Guest guest
Don't have any answers about recovery for you. I just turned 34 this week, and was diagnosed earlier this month. I'll have surgery in July or August. The doctor didn't seem to think that surgery was mission-critical at this moment. Which means I can still go on my June honeymoon - yay! But, he said that he often does surgery on a Friday, and patient are back to work on Monday. Guest guest
Hi Jacquie Plenty adult ctomas here too, this disease doesn't really care how old or young you are. Recovery varies, depending on the extent of the disease, the symptoms you already have (if any), the kind of surgery and your general state of health. The surgery can be fairly exhausting and leave you dizzy for a day or two, you will probably also be given post-op painkillers. Most people seem to need a week or two to recuperate before getting back to normal activities. It's always better to take more rest rather than less particularly if you have a hectic job. I'm 30, and my surgery is scheduled for the 1st. of april. My doctor just told me I will return to work in a week. So yes, that 5 day thing is true ;-) Your gonna be OK. Promise ;-) Hugs- Jenn
Guest guest
Hi, Jaquie - I was diagnosed about a year ago at age 56 and have had two surgeries. I would say that when you go back to work really depends on your job. I took two weeks each time, just because I could. It was nice to rest, visit with friends and family and just pamper myself. I was quite nauseous for a day after the first surgery. They gave me lots of anti nausea meds the second time around and my worst symptom after that was constipation (You may not want that degree of detail, but I think it was a side effect of the anti-nausea meds, since that wasn't a problem first time around - just a warning). We are all here to answer any questions you might have. We know how scary all this can be. Good luck to you. le ---------- >From: jmapenguin@... >cholesteatoma >Subject: Going to Have surgery at 35 >Date: Wed, Mar 23, 2005, 12:31 PM > > > > > I just found out I have to have a Ctoma removed and am scheduled for > surgery in April. Guest guest
I'm 44 and just had my first surgery for c'toma ( I'm due for my second look in June and from there I'll be dealing with the c'toma in my other ear). I think it depends on your job and the extent of the c'toma. My job as a waitress is HECTIC and my c'toma had evaded my brain....so I was out three weeks. Take your time....your healing time is important. > > > I just found out I have to have a Ctoma removed and am scheduled for > surgery in April. Hi Jacqie I was diagnosed with Cholesteatoma and had surgery in November 1999 to remove it when I was 37. Initially, I had three weeks off work and then returned part-time for three weeks. Then I had the two weeks of Christmas holidays to help me recover, as I was just so very tired all the time. Once I went back in January, I was fine. Though I'm not a medico in anyway, personally I feel you should do what's right for you, but adhering to your doctor's guidelines, too (ie not going back TOOOO early). There surely can't be any fixed time by which you will be back at work as, I think both the operation itself and the anaesthetic affect people different; some people make it back to work after a short time, others take longer. All the best Kazzy :-)
Guest guest
Hi Jacqie, I am 52 and had my first Ctoma surgery on 02/15. I needed 1-2 weeks off, but took 3 because I was able to. The first week was true recovery. I also looked awful (staples in my head etc) and I deal with the public all day long. The second week was really just to get stronger. But I opted for the 3rd week because I have been at the same place for over 30 years! So I too, took the time to pamper myself the last week. It allowed me to go back to work fully recharged! Best of luck to ya! Bettie > > > I just found out I have to have a Ctoma removed and am scheduled for > surgery in April. Guest guest
-Thank you. It has been one week since my surgery and I am back to work. Not because I really want to, but I'm doing OK. It was rough. I didn't get sick at the hospital but I did about 6 hours later at home, but just once . I think it was more tring to take pain killers on an empty stomach. My ear is still real numb and I can't taste anything on one side of my tongue. I am told all that should start to go away. Now my ear is getting really itchy, but otherwise things are going good. Thank you so much for your support. :-) Jacqie -- In cholesteatoma , " bettiejlew " <bjl1105@o...> wrote: > > Jacqie, > > I had my 1st CWU surgery on 02/15/05.
