Guest guest
Bettie, The " drilling in the background " was from my post. I didn't hear it, as I was the one having the surgery, but my husband did when the nurse called him. I can see where you wouldn't want to know about the drilling ahead of time, I didn't know that was involved until the surgery was over. I would've had all kinds of anxiety if I knew. Imagine my surprise when my husband explained that to me. Of course, he offered more graphic details than I wanted too, which is just part of his humour. I don't believe half the things he says because he jokes around so much. I guess he was joking is his way of dealing with difficult things, so I let it go. Honestly, though, don't worry about it. I'm not even sure if drilling is involved in every surgery. Mine was extensive as the c- toma had made it's way into the mastoid. What has the surgeon told you so far regarding your surgery? > > Two different references have been made to " drilling " during surgery. > One was by a post made from a spouse stating " I could hear drilling > in the background while talking with the OR nurse " . Guest guest
Every kind mastoidectomy involves an incision behind the ear, usually from the top of the ear to the bottom, close in to where the ear joins the skull. Sometimes they also make a very small incision at the front of the ear. Phil Hello All,I wasnt going to ask this question, because I didnt think I wanted to know the answer, but now my own imagination is being unkind to me and I've decided knowing is better than imagining. Two different references have been made to "drilling" during surgery. One was by a post made from a spouse stating "I could hear drilling in the background while talking with the OR nurse". Guest guest
My first surgery was having my eardrum replaced along with removal of the CToma. My surgeon said that he drilled through the mastoid bone, so that he could get a better view of the whole middle ear to make sure that he was seeing and removing all the c-toma. Prior to the " second look " /reconstruction surgery, I was told that there would be less operating time needed because he had already done that drilling the first time. I guess that means that, depending on the approach your surgeon takes, there will be some drilling through the mastoid. I was totally out and oblivious to it all and those was no obvious change in feel or appearance after my surgery. We know this whole thing is frightening, especially when you have time to think about it. As long as your surgeon does this all the time, you've picked a good one and there's nothing more you can do at this point. We'll be thinking of you. Take care of yourself and take advantage of the rest! le ---------- >From: bettiejlew <bjl1105@...> >cholesteatoma >Subject: Surgery question.... >Date: Thu, Feb 10, 2005, 11:36 AM > > > > Hello All, > > I wasnt going to ask this question, because I didnt think I wanted to > know the answer, but now my own imagination is being unkind to me and > I've decided knowing is better than imagining. > Two different references have been made to " drilling " during surgery. > One was by a post made from a spouse stating " I could hear drilling > in the background while talking with the OR nurse " . Hi I had a radical modified mastoidectomy, tympanoplasty and ossiculoplasty, but had no incision behind the ear... just a very small incision at the top (towards the front), where the ear joins the head. I find it strange reading about those who had an incision behind the ear, because I didn't have it. Kazzy :-)
