Guest guest
I had my first surgery (mastoidectomy/tympanoplasty) this past Tuesday (12/14). I go in for my first post-op tommorrow and I'll beable to find out exactly what the Doctor's did...right now I'm getting the second hand account from my husband. Due to bone erosion, they had to close an opening through to the brain and I was stuck in the hospital overnight for observation. I've had a bit of pain, but luckily, no balance problems, dizzinessor taste altercations. The ear started to seep a bit of blood on Friday night, but a call to the office assured me this was normal. Today ( Sunday) is my first day out of bed/off couch. I've felt really wiped out, something I was not ready for. I guess everyone handles these surgeries differently. Oh, I also caught a cold....not fun on top of all of this! Thanks to all who have posted before me.....your posts gave me so much info on a subject I wished I had never heard of. Also my jaw is a bit sore and I have noticed I can't close it properly. The packing feels uncomfortable and I feel nervous about how sore it will be when they take it out. I am going to see my doctor tomorrow to see about painkillers as the hospital told me just to take over the counter paracetomal but that's doing no good. Anyone else get pain in their ear after surgery and how long does this last? ------------------------- I agree with Phil. You should have pain meds. I took mine regularly at first, then less often, then only at night for a full two weeks. What does paracetomal contain? Otherwise, you sound like you are right on track for your stage of postop recovery. I had the same symptoms as you the same number of days after surgery. I feel pretty good now, but it still hurts a little to bite down hard on that side. The sharp shooting pains are also normal. I don't know if you realize, but they peel the skin back from behind your ear during mastoid surgery. Sorry to be so graphic, but those nerves are really irritated. They'll settle down soon, but it the meantime, it's no wonder it HURTS. Some patients hurt less than others, but you've had trauma to your head! I've been fortunate not to have ever had skin stitches or staples during my surgeries. I have always had foam packing inside my ears that dissolves eventually. I've had skin stitches and staples in other areas, so I know how that feels. Go get the drugs you need to heal pain-free. You'll have less stress and it will help you get better faster. -- Diane Chidgey McNelly Sassy Suds, Inc. http://www.sassysuds.com
Guest guest
Hi Diane Went to my doctor today and he gave me painkillers and antiflammatories to take. That is now helping with the pain. Feel drowsy with it but it's a good feeling in a strange kind of way. Should be able to get a good night's sleep. My doctor said the hospital should have gave me painkillers so he was surprised to hear they never. Feeling much better now. Nothing worse than ear pain.
