dra,

Glad to hear you are back home from the hospital, hope you are not in too much pain.

Take care of yourself during this recuperating process.

Hi Everyone

I am new to this site, but have found it extremely helpful. I am from

the UK and am having my first surgrey next week on wednesday. I am a

little nervous as I didn't know what it would be like but have found

some answers in your emails. As I have never had an op before don't

know what its gonna be like. Not alot of people in the UK have heard

of cholesteatoma. A quick question does, how quick does the hearing

come back in the ear, its just I have quite a marked loss?

Cheers

Hi Ria

Sorry to hear that you also have this dreadful disease. I also live

in the UK and had my first c-toma operation on my right ear in

August 2003 and am due to have a 2nd operation for c-toma recurrance

in September 2004 and then another operation once that has healed

for c-toma which has now occured in my left ear.

After my first operation I was not too well I developed what the

doctors called Labrynthitis (basically I was throwing up for 2 days

and felt really ill like I was really drunk but much worse the room

was spinning around really fast). My doctor gave me some tablets

for this but I can't understand why they didn't mention to me that

this might happen before I had my operation (at least I know for

next time), it might be worth mentioning this to your doctor he may

be able to give you something in case you develop this. If that

wasn't bad emough I then developed post-op infection and had to go

back in hospital for 2 days and have 6 bags of antibiotics through

IV.

Anyway hopefully you will have a quick speedy recovery, I just

seemed to be unlucky a lot of people have recovered fairly quickly

from reading other peoples responses everyone is different. On a

more positive note my scar is really good you can hardly tell I've

had it done and I had very little hair shaved. My hearing didn't

actually change that much which was also a good thing (not so sure

this will be the case after my 2nd op though), you will feel a

little deaf while the packaging is in though.

Good Luck to you and I hope you feel well soon.

Zoe.

Hi Ria

I'm also in the UK. Outside of the ENT department and everybody on this site, you'll find that there aren't many people anywhere who've heard of ctoma.

One thing I will say about the surgery is that it will be lengthy. It requires delicate microsurgey and so anything from 3 to to 7 hours could be considered in normal range. It may help to remind anyone who is enquiring after you of that fact because they're only likely to become more anxious as the surgery drags on.

You may expect to have a bit of a messy ear and a sore head following the surgery. You'll probably be given painkillers to take for the first week or two. Some other things you may experience dizziness at first, bleeding and discharge from the ear and often a temporary disturbance of your sense of taste. Few people have any great problems with the recovery and most are fine after a week of two of rest.

I do have to tell you that your hearing may not come back immediately after the surgery. It could even be worse. Much depends on how much permanent damage has been done to the little bones in the middle ear that conduct sound. Many people do undergo a second (milder) surgery six months or a year after the first. This would be to check that ear has remained free of ctoma and to restore hearing by resonstructing the bones. The surgeon will most likely come to talk to you on the morning of the operation, so you could ask then - you may be just a bit too nervous to take it in though.

Good luck and speedy recovery

Phil
