Guest guest
Hi All, Well, I just got back from seeing my surgeon and reviewing the CAT scan I had yesterday. There's absolutely no doubt about it, I have a ctoma; in fact, it's filling the entire ear cavity behind my eardrum and is completely engulfing the hearing bones. The CAT scan clearly shows the hearing bones are eroded and must be replaced. The surgeon was surprised that I only had 30% hearing loss with such a massive ctoma. Due to the size of the ctoma, my surgeon is requesting an emergency surgery date. Needless to say, she want the ctoma out now! She expects I will have surgery within next two weeks and told me to stay by my phone and be ready to go at a moments notice. The surgery plan is to do a CWU procedure to remove the ctoma, hearing bones and to clean everything up. I'll have the packing remove in a week and have check-ups at two and four weeks. If everything looks good at four weeks, I'll be able to fly. Nine months after my first surgery, I'll have my second surgery to " install' my prosthetic hearing bones. My surgeon said she prefer to use synthetic bone prosthetics over titanium due to their ability to transfer sound better. Rich
Guest guest
Rich, Not to be a downer on the subject, but my daughter had the same thing done on June 2, 2004 and was to have the reconstruction of bones done in March of 2005. When they went in in March the found another Ctoma. I am not trying to get you down, but to tell you what we have learned from all of this. We never get our hopes up that what they say they are going to do during surgery is really what happens. I hope this isn't true for you, because I would not want anyone to go thru what we have been thru and are still going thru.
