It's definitely best to get the surgery. Ctoma can kill you if you don't have the surgery, and the symptoms as you get worse are awful. Plus if you let it get so far that it goes into the brain cavity, you may not fully recover.

It's better not to get Ctoma, but that's out of our contral and, once you have it, there are some inconveniences you may have to live with. Since you expressed a strong preference for not going to doctors and seemed to think that the Wall Down might mean fewer future doc visits, I was trying to tell you that the Wall Down will not mean fewer doc visits. Just a different kind of visits; cleaning instead of looking so much for a reoccurrence perhaps.

You can talk to your surgeon about the Wall Up versus Wall Down version and express your preference but, ultimately, she or he will have to make the decision during the surgery once he sees the state of things inside your head. Still, it would be good for you to know the future possible effects of both options, then you can have your expectations aligned with the facts.

I'm sorry this is happening to you! :-(

Terrance,

Definitely HAVE the surgery. If C-tomas are left untreated they can eventually lead to death. If you do have the CWD, routine cleanings are done as office visits. Your doctor will use a tool to suction out any build up and debris that is hanging out in your middle ear. The reason is because your ear canal is enlarged and fluids and such can actually drain into your middle ear rather than flowing through correctly. I would recommend that you talk to Tom or Phil as they can provide you with the best information available.

Good luck,

Because of a cholesteatoma, I had a CWD mastoidectomy, tympanoplasty (reconstruction of ear drum) and ossiculoplasty (reconstruction of the hearing bones) all carried out in one operation in November 1999. I feel there's nothing to fear at all. The cholesteatoma is out - with no recurrence to date - the eardrum has withstood a few more perforations and the hearing bones lasted a fair while, too.... so although I'm not a doctor and have absolutely no experience in this field (except personal experience as a patient) I would suggest there's no reason for you not to have it - if you need it.

Kazzy :-)
