Guest guest
Hi Janet, Good luck with your surgery. There are several people on the forum who have reported improved tinnitus after CI surgery. I am one of them. Mine has really improved since activation. I think the chances of it improving your tinnitus are very good. Best regards, Jim > > Regarding several posts on being deaf/hoh and then experiencing sudden > hearing loss accompanied by tinnitis. Guest guest
Janet, I'm one of the many that has seen an improvement with tinnitus after having the CI surgery. My was a mild case prior to that and then afterwards, it was blessed silence. Mind you, after about two weeks of that right after surgery, I was climbing up the walls to hear something again (no not the tinnitus of course) and fortunately that happened about five days later when activated :-) FYI - I remember seeing the discussion about activation times after surgery and mine was 2 1/2 weeks. Guest guest
Hi everyone. Over the last year I've noticed that if I get water into my right ear my hearing is very poor for a day or two until the water " clears. " Hi Ian Water would clog up your ear if you have a perforation. If that's so you should never let water enter your ear, not least because the water would be a vehicle for bacteria which would cause ear infection. Have you had mastoidectomy surgery in the past? Guest guest
Hi Jackie, I've had this happen twice so far -- my right ear in 1993 and my left ear in 2008. I went on a steroid regimen both times (which had no effect) and the first time it happened I also had additional testing -- blood work and a CAT scan, to rule out a tumor or other cause. I was not able to regain hearing in either ear but would certainly be happy to talk to her via email because I know how scary it is! ~Wendi in Illinois http://suddensilence.wordpress.com/
Guest guest
Thanks, Wendi - and Jim. I've passed your information to my friend. She is having a heck of a time getting anyone to see her. She's also been in touch with Dr. House, but it seems she needs a referral, and her Canadian Dr. won't give it. It's so crazy. Jackie **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Guest guest
Jackie, She needs to contact her ENT doc immediately. There are some conditions that can be treated if caught early enough. If ignored they can cause permanent hearing loss. Jim > > Hi, All, > A woman on an unrelated forum I'm on has lost all hearing in one ear > overnight. Guest guest
Didn't that happen over a year or maybe 2 years ago to Rush Limbaugh because of some medications he was taking? Maybe he's written something about it. Perhaps if you Google it. > > Hi, All, > A woman on an unrelated forum I'm on has lost all hearing in one ear > overnight. Guest guest
Hi Jackie - I am one of those cases where I lost my hearing in both ears within a 36-hour period back in January 2007. As another post mentioned, it is imperative that he/she get in to see an ENT asap as a steroid regime is started and timing is critical. In my situation, the steroid treatment did not restore any hearing and hearing aids did not help as I lost all hearing. I did have an MRI to rule out acoustic neuroma. I am now a bilateral CI receipient and thriving with my magic ears! However, the year between when I lost my hearing overnight to my CI surgery was a LONG and painful time in my life with very little coping skills in how to adapt to my daily life. You are welcome to pass along my e-mail address if I can provide any support for fellow hearing loss colleagues. - > > Hi, All, > A woman on an unrelated forum I'm on has lost all hearing in one ear > overnight. Guest guest
Hi Evon, Yes, it is unusual but occasionally some of the electrodes in the CI can stimulate the facial or balance nerves in the ear. Usually this can be fixed by turning off the electrodes that are causing the stimulation. Guest guest
Jim, Right at the time when Rush Limbaugh lost his hearing suddenly (2001)-I was seeing an ENT-and each visit with this docotor-he would start-you are just like Rush Limbaugh. He was wrong on so many counts. When Rush Limbaugh lost his hearing it was thought it was due to Auto Immune Inner Ear Disease, but it was discovered a year or so later-after Rush had the ci surgery and he was able to return to talk radio-that he was abusing medications-for back pain I believe. Guest guest
LOL, Lillian!! To be likened to Rush Limbaugh could be disconcerting indeed. ;<) Virg ps. For what it's worth, when I visited an ENT here after sudden hearing loss he said " Something must have gone haywire inside. " That kinda floored me. I wrote to him later saying that my grandson agreed with him but I was hoping for a bit more rigorous diagnosis. Seeing him just once was more than enough. Guest guest
Sudden hearing loss is a medical emergency, and she should see an ENT doctor immediately! It is sometimes reversible, all or in part, provided it is treated without delay. Rick Gilbert
Guest guest
Once again, I just want to thank everyone for your replies to my sudden hearing loss plea. My friend was very aggresive and did get in to see an ENT. He perscribed exactly what Dr. House suggested in an e-mail to her, so she is pleased with that. She reported a small return of hearing, but by the next day it was gone again. I've forwarded your posts to her, so she knows the odds are long. Right now she is very emotional and won't even speak of it! Hopefully time will give her some hearing back. But I'll be there for her if or when she considers a hearing aid. Her other ear is perfect so she wouldn't qualify for a CI. So thanks everyone - If I hear more I certainly will pass iton to you. Have a great weekend.
