Guest guest
Hello: 2 months ago I had surgery to remove a " supposed " cholesteatoma. Once my ENT opened the mastoid, he found I did not have a cholesteatoma but I did have a lot of granulated tissue and a partially collapsed ear drum. He removed part of the eardrum and one of the bones because it was so imbedded in the granulated tissue. My recovery has been okay, but about a month ago I started noticing a very metallic taste in my mouth and it's not going away. Has anyone experienced any similar symptoms? I'm just wondering - I'm going to follow-up with the Dr. at my next appt. to find out from him also. Thanks. Carol
Guest guest
This metallic taste is caused by nerve damage. Mine lasted for several months after surgery. It slowly went away. I think. Sometimes when things taste strange, I wonder if it is back. Is your tounge numb? Mine was on one side. good luck tom
Guest guest
Hi Carol Frequently due to the stretching of the taste nerve that runs through the ear. I had a the metallic taste before surgery and no taste at all following it. I also noticed that my sense of smell altered, things suddenly smelled chemically. My sense of taste came back completely after 6 months. It's rarely a permanent thing. Some women also get a metallic taste during pregnancy. Guest guest
Hi Carol, The metallic taste is one of the symptoms of damaged or disturbed taste nerve which is in the middle ear. Usually that is apparent immediately following the surgery. If you didn't have it before I would mention it to your doc when you see him. jane >From: " clagundo1 " <clagundo@...> >Reply-cholesteatoma >cholesteatoma >Subject: 2 months post-op - Metallic taste in mouth? Guest guest
I have the same thing!! It kinda tastes like i'm chewing on a piece of aluminum foil! IT drives me crazy! My doctor told me that it is normal because when they go into the ear it is very common for nerves to the tongue to get pushed aside, cut, damaged. He said that in any case my taste will return! So according to my doc. it's normal, as for your three bones being damaged. I told another person here about this too. My doc. had to remove all three of my bones because the c-Toma ate all of them except little bump which were mush. He did tell me that after i wait for the ear drum to take, he will go back in and replace those three bones with prosthetics. After i should have next to normal hearing again. > Hello: > > 2 months ago I had surgery to remove a " supposed " cholesteatoma. > Once my ENT opened the mastoid, he found I did not have a > cholesteatoma but I did have a lot of granulated tissue and a > partially collapsed ear drum.
