There aren't any safe alternatives for except perhaps except perhaps using olive to soften the wax and even then it shouldn't be done if there's the slightest perforation or any ear canal disease - and you have to ask your surgeon's permission. The safest method is to let the doctor suction out any debris/wax.

Regarding ear candling: if you type ear candling serious ear disease into Google, you'll soon get the message that even the ear candling people themselves are against this with anything as serious as ctoma i.e.

Ear Candling should not be done in the following situations:(1) recent ear surgery; (2) cysts in the ear; (3) mastoiditis in its acute phase; (4) ear drains (tubes); (5) recent ear injury or damage to the ear drum; (6) artificial ear drums; and (7) tumors of the ear.

People with a serious ear disease, tubes in their ears, ear drum damage or an upper respiratory infection should consult a doctor before candling their ears.

Hi

Warm olive oil is about the best ear wax softener there is: it's just as good as any of the commercial ear wax drops that you get from the pharmacy. You'd need to get your doctor's advice and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be allowed to use anything in an open cavity ear i.e. the mastoid and/or middle ear are exposed. I do have CWD mastoidectomy and no eardrums. I also have canal cholesteatoma in both ears (which gets suctioned treated once a month), so putting anything in my ears is out of the question.
