I have a ctoma in the ear canal. It is rare, but a few other people in

this group have it also.

Are you sure it was removed, or was it just cleaned? Did your otologist

recommend surgery? I think that's the standard treatment ... I'm having

surgery on mine in Feb.

Yes. Nearly all ctomas occur in the middle ear and canal ctoma, as already mentioned, is unusual. It's possible to get both kinds of ctoma simultaneously.

If the canal ctoma is fairly small and hasn't spread then the doctor may opt to manage it ie. by cleaning. It may be difficult to get rid of the disease this way, depending on the underlying cause. Canal ctoma doesn't simply sit in the ear canal but eats into the surrounding bone wall and embeds itself there. This is why the cleaning you experienced would be extremely painful - the doctor is actually trying to dig out the ctoma. I don't know what the doctor has told you but I imagine there is a strong chance that the disease will simply spring up again and you have to carry on with the cleanings.

Also bad buzzing in the ear since-does that usually lessen and if so when?

I'm afraid no-one can really tell you. The tinnitus may have been exacerbated by the suction cleaning and maybe it will subside. The best you can do is not to let the noise stress you out.

yes- the ctoma was definately removed in the office- she showed it to

me after it was taken out- it was pretty small and was totally

distinguishable from the wax that was attatched to it since it was

almost pure white with some red dots on it and alittle bumpy vs. the

smooth dark color wax. I wonder if the size or various other factors

allowed it to be removed in the office. Has anyone out there had one

removed in the office with no anesthetic?

My doctor did that as well - pulled out a big piece of the white

stuff (keratin), but he said that it needed surgery to remove it all

and prevent recurrance. I would be a little skeptical that all of it

was removed by in-office cleaning - there may be a lot more in the

mastoid. If your doctor has you sheduled for regular

cleaning/checkup, then he can monitor whether there is more that

needs to be surgically removed.

update:

for 2 weeks after the office ctoma removal I was on ear drops and

went back to Dr. a few days ago. She says she think she got the

entire ctoma out because of the way the surface of where it was looks

now but am having a cat scan of the area next week to make sure, then

I go back to her to hear results of that . Not sure yet what the long

term check up scheldule will be.
