Packing Removal

Hi,

They gently pull the packing out. You will be so amazed at how much

packing there can put in an ear. It just keeps coming and coming and

coming. Sorta feel like he's a magician pulling scarves from his

sleeve. It really doesn't hurt. It can pull on some skin a little,

but I've never had pain from that (4 surgeries, thus far). I did get

dizzy after the last time. But that was the only side effect. It

feels soooo good to get it out of there.

Sallie,

No - it doesn't hurt. Wee bit of a weird feeling because so much packing comes out - it can get stuck inside but a gentle pull which doesn't hurt and it's out. They use what looks like a tweezer and then pull it out slowly. I had four wads of the packaging. I felt fine after it was out and it was a great feeling to have it out. They put back in some cream which made me dizzy.

take care and good luck to your daughter

I had my packing removed yesterday and i was expecting to have

somewhat " ok " hearing, however after the packing was removed it still

sounds muffled and sounds are distorted almost like a broken speaker.

There is still a lot of drainage and blood coming out, but has anyone

else experienced this? Will the hearing come back - I did have an

audio immediately after and the results came back as the same as before

the surgery, but it sure doesnt feel that way...any info would be

helpful - this is my only hearing ear and cant afford to loose more

hearing - Im totally freaked out by this.

orbitzz77,

I would check with your doctor and see if you still have packing inside the ear. You very well might. Did you have a canal wall up or down? And did they do a tympanoplasty? I had a canal wall down with tympanoplasty on nov 3rd and i still to this day have some foam packing in my ear.Any it sure does muffle sounds a bit. My doctor removed the external packing after a week but there was still more inside the ear canal. He gave me drops to soften it and on my second post-op he sucked some of it out. He said when i go in again in Feb he will remove the rest.

As far as the drainage goes how long ago was the surgery? On mine i had a ton of drainage for like a month and it was blood stained for like three weeks. After that it ran clear for a couple more weeks. Its pretty dry now but i do get the occasional leak of fluid.

Like i said above, check with the doc on the packing. I wouldnt be surprised if you still had some in there. My hearing was pretty bad in the ear that had the surgery( previously my good ear) for close to a month post-op. Now that all the swelling and fluid is gone and most of the packing has been removed is has gotten much better and it seems to get better by the day. I hope for your sake you have the same thing going on that i did and you just need to give it time to heal.

-Hi,

My Dr. has only given me drops after the packing is already removed. Some

people seem to get drops before to help soften the packing, but I guess that

isn't always the case. I suppose it depends on the doctor.

I've had 2 surgeries so far and the first time I had the packing removed I took

some painkillers prior to the appointment. I don't remember having much pain

that time at all. However, the second surgery was more radical and I also

didn't take the painkillers beforehand- big mistake! But I think a lot depends

on the type of surgery as well - there was a bigger cavity and much more gauze

to pull out of the ear the second time around. I bet that's what made it so much

worse the second time.

If you are nervous about it I recommend taking your painkillers before the

appointment. Good luck!

to be awful? How will it go? It may be that they don't take the packing out as

I am generally slow to heal but having said that, I think this warm climate down

in the southwest is having a postive effect. Anyway, your thoughts / help would

be appreciated - assume I should take pain killer before I go? Also, what

happens next please?

-glad to hear your fears were unfounded. Great news. And about the hair washing---lol---I couldn't wait to get my hands on my son's head! His hair was so gross it looked brown-now it's bouncy and shiny again and a beautiful caramel colour. (nothing against brown hair-I have brown hair-well, I still have brown hair thanks to nice and easy 118A!) The little things make such a difference eh? Don't forget your vitamin C, zinc and such for healing. It really does make a difference! Question: where exactly does the packing "disolve" to, or go, when it, uhm, disolves? Surely we don't want stuff in the ear canal-and it can't just disappear.....always wondered about this! Denna Poulos

Hi Jackie & Denna - Thanks for your replies, both were very helpful & appreciated. So I went in, armed with painkiller already doing the job to be told no packing would be removed - it is soluable - whoops I had forgotten that Doh! I had the strip removed from the back of the ear holding the skin/stitches together and a nice tidy job was revealed. I start Ciprodex drops in a couple of weeks - they are being very cautious as I am not a quick healer. Packing is to stop adhesions - so actually am glad again of the cautious route as I tend to adhere. See the Doc again in 5 weeks. I need to be ready then as that is when any remaining packing will be removed.I've been listing (list a ship) off to one side every now and then but Doc thinks that it may be because the packing is a little tight on the corner bone - I think it is just one of those things, nothing to worry about. I could have some steroids but they delay healing so

naturally we agreed that this was maybe not the best move.Washed just over half my hair this morning - what a relief :)Denna - I get the zingers too. I broke my leg a number of years ago and when the 'knitting' took place :) my leg would suddenly shoot up in the air - used to make me & my hubby jump out of our skin :)
