Guest guest
I had posted back in June and was planning to have my surgery after my vacation. Now I am wondering about waiting until late Sept early Oct. to have it done. My sister thinks that I am trying to avoid having it. Don't you think that it is a good idea to wait. It won't be so hot and muggy. It might effect my swimming and holiday schedules. I just think that I might be more comfortable in the fall. I am already getting very anxious about this surgery. Last night I had a dream about waking up from the aneasthia, realizing that I have woken up and the feeling terrible pain in my Left ear. It was so vivid. How long will I be out of work? I am a nurse and I do alot of walking and bending over my med cart. I have read alot about dizziness and stuff and It all scares me. I get motion sickness very easy now.. I can only imagine how I will be after surgery!! I do not tolerate anesthesia well at all. Sorry this is so long but I am getting extremely nervous and uptight about this!!! Guest guest
Hello LuLu, I don't think surgery should be put off. The sooner you get it taken care of, the less damage done. I have always heard that docs and nurses don't make good patients (my ex sister-in-law is a nurse in a trauma unit, bad patient). Could this be something you are experiencing? You see first hand what people go through and maybe you are avoiding it because you don't want to be in that position. I can understand that, but I still say the sooner you get the surgery done, then less damage will be done and hopefully a shorter recovery. It seems like the average recovery time is about 2 weeks, but everyone varies. Having cholesteatoma should affect your swimming holiday anyways. Having a wet ear is an awesome environment for infections and so on. You are a nurse so I am sure you know. Discuss your concerns about anethesia with your doctor and anethesiologist. My hubby didn't do to well with oxygen sats after his first surgery, too much anesthesia. For the 2nd, 3rd and 4th surgeries adjustments were made and he did just fine. Please don't postpone your surgery. Get it done and get it over with. Please let me know what you decide. We do care at this site. Guest guest
Dear Lulu Please have your surgery ASAP. The longer you delay the worse things can become. I went back to work two weeks after my last op. My first op (which I postponed!!) was a lot more serious and I had four weeks off work. Everyone is different in how they heal. I was not allowed to bend forward or blow my nose for two weeks. Anyway I'm sure the others will agree do not delay your surgery. Take care Audrey want to delay... Guest guest
--- Hi Lulu, I agree with the others that you should not postpone your surgery.I waited 5 years and that was too long. The surgery to remove the c-toma was supposed to be 2 hours ended up being 7 hours, because I put it off for so long that it had invaded so much. I am recovery from my 3rd surgery that I had 3 weeks ago. Today i can honestly say that I FEEL GOOD!!!!!! You just have to rest and let your body heal afterwards, everyone is different. I do remember that after the c-toma removal surgery, I was up and out the door only a week later and felt good. They will take good care of you don't worry. they also use facial monitors during surgery, so it will be safe. Take care hon, and don't wait too long. Charla. Guest guest
Hi there, I had ear problems all my life. My family doctor told me to go to an ENT for over a year and I finally went. I was afraid they would want to put tubes in my ears and having that done while you are awake hurts. Much to my surprise the doc didn't want to put tubes instead she wanted me to have a CAT Scan, I was diagnosed with a cholesteatoma in late February 2002. She sent me to an Otologist 2 hours away (Houston, TX) because I had let it go for so long and now it was beyond what she can repair. What I am getting at is DON'T put it off, it is not worth the risk. I had a massive 5 hour mastoidectomy and tymphoplasty, all my ear bones were gone and they had to patch my temporal bone, yes it invaded the brain. It is a serious condition and should be treated as such. I had my surgery within a month that I was diagnosed. The recovery is different for everyone, I haven't been dizzy at all, at first (for the first three days) I got motion sickness pretty bad, I felt back to myself in two weeks, but after one week I felt a lot better. I still feel pressure in my head when I bend over, but it doesn't hurt. I just got back from vacation at the beach and had a wonderful time with my family without getting in the water, it was heart breaking to not be able to swim with my 15 month old son, but I have to take care of myself right now, I can have loads of fun later and so can you. Please take care of yourelf and don't let the situation get out of hand like I did, it is much more painful if you let it go. Good luck Mancie Beck --- gamesaddict1 <gamesaddict1@...> wrote: > I had posted back in June and was planning to have > my surgery after > my vacation. Guest guest
Lulu You have to relax a bit... it sounds like you are all worked up. Obviously surgery is necessary, how long you wait, depends on you and your surgeon. Generally it is best to have it done asap... You may find that your dizzyness is gone after surgery... it depends on what the c-toma has damaged and what repairs your ENT makes. I am a nurse as well, and I ended up staying off work for 1 month. Initially it was to be 2 weeks, but my ENT insisted on leaving my packing in my ear, so I didn't go back to work till it came out. But recovery was relatively uneventful. Again, it depends on what the ENT has to do. Remember that most people can go back to work with one to two weeks, so most people are fine following surgery. Try to remember what you tell your patients when you prepare them for the OR... you try to make them relax keep them informed, ease their worries... Anasthetics are much better than they used to be. If your surgery is in the hospital you work in, maybe you can select your anaestetist... in any case, most anasthetists like to have a consultation prior to surgery, and you can discuss your concerns with him/her. Hope you can calm down. You'll be much better off once the C-toma is out! Lynn want to delay... > I had posted back in June and was planning to have my surgery after > my vacation.
