Guest guest
I did. I had my CWD at age 15 and I'm now 24. I have had drainage and infections throughout the years since. No recurrence of C-toma though. I think sometimes you're just prone to infections. There were several times that my ear actually bled and I was in excrutiating pain. My doc gave me antibiotics (oral and drops) and something for pain. Eventually we determined that I had a hole in my ear drum that wasn't there previously. At the end of August I had a tympanoplasty to repair my ear drum and still have slight drainage. Some people have it worse than others. I go roughly every 3-4 months to have my ear "cleaned". Some don't have to for up to a year. Depends on the person I think. cathy <cathym.bscpa@...> wrote: My son had a cwd 18 months ago and still has problems with that ear draining. Guest guest
, Thanks for your response. I wondered if he is going to be one of the ones that has to have cleanings every 4 months or so. Seems like that's how often he gets infected and then it takes 4-6 weeks to get rid of the infections. Perhaps if he were cleaned out sooner it wouldn't get infected. If we can ever get him to a " real " ENT we may get some answers. Do you have a hearing aid? I worry that he won't be able to wear his once we get it. > My son had a cwd 18 months ago and still has problems with that ear > draining. It has been infected several times in the past year. Guest guest
I have noticed that if I go more often (before the drainage gets too bad) the infections are less frequent. No, I don't wear a hearing aid since I'm used to not being able to hear all that well anyway. I've had ear problems since I was 2. Since it's probably been since around that time that I actually lost my hearing it's never really bothered me. My "good" ear makes up for the loss (at times). But the older I get the more I'm noticing the loss. After my ear drum heals from the tympanoplasty in 3-6 months I will have reconstruction done. Most people wonder why I waited so long but the short story is just that it's not really ever bothered me until now. For me, a hearing aid probably wouldn't have been a good option because of the drainage. It's something my doc says I will probably live with for the rest of my life. One day I was in for a cleaning and he told me about a 70 something year old man that had had a mastoidectomy back when he was young and he still had to have cleanings done. Sounds like maybe your son is in my boat. But each person is different. He may grow out of it. I'm not really sure. How old is your son? And if he doesn't have a "real" ENT, who did the surgery? cathy <cathym.bscpa@...> wrote: ,Thanks for your response. Guest guest
, My son is 19 now. He was 14 when the c-toma was diagnosed by a Navy ENT who was great. He took care of my son for 5 years and did all 3 surgeries. Unfortunately he left the Navy 5 months after my sons' last surgery and the new ENT is fresh out of residency and I don't think has enough experience with c-tomas. He definitely has a bad attitude. That's a large part of the problem. The new ENT says these infections " aren't important and don't matter. " It's been nearly impossible to get my son into the ENT clinic to get this new ENT to clean out the bowl when it gets infected. Instead they send him to the primary care clinic where those drs don't even now what they're looking at when they look in his ear. They just know its not right. They give him antibiotics and refer him to ENT so we can make an appointment in that clinci but then there are never any appointments available and we have to fight with them to get them to take care of him. The last time was September 3rd after infection which started August 13th. Shortly after that cleanig my son's ear was bleeding. We're trying to get him sent out to the ENT that did the surgery so he can get proper medical care but the insurance company is slow in approving referrals. My son is a musician so he really notices the hearing loss. He goes to the Berklee College of Music in January and I'm hoping we can get this resolved before then. He does ok with his music but not with conversation. He needs to be able to hear what's going on in class. That's why we want to get the hearing aid made soon and want him to be able to use it. His college career depends on him being able to hear well enough to follow a conversation. As far as the music goes; he's so talented that the c-tomas and the hearing loss hasn't affected that. But I can't help but imagine that if he could hear he would be even better at his music. We knew that he would need life-long follow up care, especially for cleanings and that everyone is different so how often he needed cleanings would be a personal thing. Too bad the Navy has an ENT who got through residency without this basic knowledge. Thanks for your help. It's good to have others willing to tell their experience and give the newbees some insight. With everyones' help I'm sure we'll get it " fixed. " > > My son had a cwd 18 months ago and still has problems with that ear > > draining.
