I am " looking forward " to surgery on July 15. This will be on the L ear. I

previously had this done some 30 years ago on the R ear. I am running out of

ears over here.

L ear started bleeding this morning. I called the doc and he said not to

worry about it, to douche it with vinegar & water and if it's still bleeding

in a couple days to come in.

Question: My memory of having the packing removed after the first surgery

was a very painful one. Doc says it shouldn't be too bad this time. What

have other people experienced in this regard? How long after surgery did it

happen?

Hi Jeff,

I have had 2 surgeries since Feb this year, and had no problems having the

packing out. The first surgery wasn't for c-toma, but I had packing in

anyway, and it came out after 10 days. The second surgery in May, on the

same ear was to remove the c-toma, and my surgeon left the packing in for

almost one month. It was ready to fall out at that point, and it felt

really good to have it out.

WOW, 30 years since your last surgery.... You'd wouldn't think you'd have to

go through with that again.

Wow...30 years you are our "vet" I'm sure.... Think positive..... the other option is what???!!! I have occasionally had my ears bleed and try always not to panic. Living in a remote area with nobody to talk to ( let alone understand this disease) has sometimes meant ignorance is bliss. I usually treat it with drops (Sofradex...I don't know what it is in USA but an antibiotic) and packing with cotton wool. I honestly cannot remember the removal of packing after an op ( I've had 4) being painful. More a relief ....as when the ear heals (swelling subdues) and packing dries it becomes itchy and the removal is a relief.... for me anyway. I do know when removing dry "tissue" after my last op (5 weeks ago....no doctor around to do it) it can feel "slightly painful with the "sharp" edges perhaps touching the canal wall. Personally I am not too keen on the vinegar "thang"...still I am no ENT just not keen on any form of "wet" being introduced to the ear even though the vinegar is "supposed" to evaporate. Hi Charla, It takes time...is the best advice I can give you. After my first op they waited a full year before any further surgery. I was glad they did. It's only two weeks since your surgery...try not to be impatient. I repeat it took six months (after my first surgery) before I could even lay on my c-toma ear...and at least 4 weeks before I could walk around feeling ok. Hi Audrey

It has been just over 2 months since my surgery, and although I can sleep on my c-toma (now free) ear, I find that it isn't the same anymore. It still feels tender, and I tend not to stay on that ear. I am still very aware of that ear. It still rings constantly, and has occasional pain inside and around the external part. Nothing serious, but enough to keep me aware of it. I recently had my hair cut, and while washing my hair, my hairdresser was rubbing my scalp near my surgical site a little too vigourously. I had to remind her to be gentle... I didn't think that would be necessary... I also have a small amount of waxy drainage and sometimes a crusty residue in the external canal, which leads me to think that my ear is still able to get rid of the cerumen... Sometimes the inside of my ear feels "stiff", when I turn my head or make a sudden movement.

What is really nice is that most people cannot tell I have had surgery, even though I have had 2 procedures done since Feb. My ears are very much different from each other, but unless you really look at both, it is not noticeable.

Reconstructive surgery ususally isn't done till at least 6 months, but like

Audrey says, don't rush it. You said you have noise in you ear, is it

tinitus? If it is, that may not go away.. I have it constant in my ear

since my first surgery in Feb.

I haven't had a problem with dizzyness since the surgery, so I can't comment

on those excercises... only that I heard it helps. I think Lorie had a

problem with dizzyness, and she was given excercises. Maybe if she sees

this, she can answer your question. Good luck with that.

Hello Jeff:

I had my 1st. surgery on June 14th R ear. I had the outer packing

taken out on the 17th. I thought " WOW " this is great didn't hurt at

all, came out pretty easy too. Then I went in and had the inner

packing out on the 24th. (I know I mentioned to some of u that I was

not going to say that it hurt), but it did hurt! Best way that I

could desribe it is, imagine a string of large beads, and the beads

are larger then your ear. Imagine those beads being pulled out of

your ear one by one with a space inbetween each bead. That's how it

felt to have the packing out. But, within about 1 hour I felt better.

So when u go in to get your packing out, hold on to that chair real

tight!!!!! Since the 24th I've had all kinds the different things go

on with my ear. I've had all kinds of noises and sensations inside.

I've had dizziness off and on. I couldn't go out of the house without

someone with me to hold on to, and couldn't walk a straight line. It

took me to approx. to July 3rd or 4th to feel normal again. I have

yet to jump into the car though. But I managed to hop onto the lawn

tractor today and cut grass! Everyone on this list is different in

the recovery process. " It takes time to recover from this surgery and

u HAVE to give yourself time to get over it " . I don't know how many

times I was told this by members of this wonderful group we have

here! LOL And while I'm on the member subject, I'd once again like to

thank u all for letting me vent my frustrations and worries with my

recovery

Hello, Jeff. I think you will find that this is an area where things have improved a great deal. My 1st surgery (right ear) was in 12/98 & the packing removal was not fun. It was also rather drawn out - weekly visits, then every 2 weeks, took awhile. For operations 2 & 3 (6/00 & 5/02) they used the dissolving packing & so far it's been fine. There's a lot less cleaning/pulling required with the dissolving stuff.

This time, in fact, I saw him a week after surgery & he pretty much left it alone. He (the ENT) wanted me back in a month, & I go in tomorrow for that. I expect suctioning, but it'll be the 1st time since surgery which isn't bad. The ear "feels" pretty clear to me. The only problem I had was a croupy cough/tight wheezey chest that developed a week or so after surgery that my ENT & regular doctor felt was related to irritation from the dissolving packing dripping down.

Hi Jeff,

My son, Max, just had his second c-toma removal. He's

having his packing removed today at 4:30!

He's very nervous because the first packing removal (2

years ago with the first surgery) was painful when

they finally removed the inner packing. He was 10 at

the time and the ENT didn't say anything about it -

just whoosh - grabbed it straight out.

I think this time will be much easier. He didn't have

an eardrum graft this time and there is a lot less

packing. He can feel it moving around this time.

So - we can sympathize with your concern. I think

every time is different, so hopefully you will have an

easier time - this time.

Max's second surgery was much easier than the first.

It went so well, we couldn't believe it. We were

expecting all the problems we had the first time

(nausea, dizziness, having to hold his head perfectly

still for the first 24 hours, etc) and we had none of

that. He went home the same afternoon and has been

doing great!
