Question: how long does recovery take?

Hi. You are all so great and knowledgeable. I need to figure out

realistically what to expect after surgery. I have confirmed it is a

cholesteatoma. It is well into the Mastoid bone. I am having CWD

surgery. I am in law school and have scheduled my surgery for

December 18 -2days after my last final this semester. I am scheduled

to start my next semester on January 3rd with full time internship

plus classes. Is this feasible? Thank you so much.

Hi Tammi,

I had a similar experience to you. Right ear CWD mastoidectomy. I

lost the hearing bones as well as two of the balance organs. I don't

recall too much in the way of pain (three cheers for demorol). My

biggest problem was balance. I was back to work in 2 weeks and back

running within a month. If your experience is similar to mine, then

you should be ok going back to school and your internship after a

full two weeks under mom's care (take what you can get).

Mileage of course can vary.

I just had my first surgery (CWU) 2 weeks ago today

and (thankfully) was back at work 4 days after surgery

and felt “normal” after 1 week. Given that you are

having CWD surgery, your recovery will likely take

longer.

My best advice would be to speak with next semester's

professors and your employer now – so that they know

you are having major surgery and that recover will

take a few weeks.

Will someone be with you after surgery? You won’t be

allowed to drive for at least a week (longer depending

on your symptoms), nor will you be able to lift

things. Having a parent or friend nearby (while not a

must) is really helpful - especially when you are

dizzy.

Hi , I was back to work in 10 days. I also had the CWD. It was actually a pretty easy experience. Michele,

Thank you for the advice and concern. You are very

kind to worry about my care. I am lucky enough to

have a good support system. My husband, mother and

mother-in-law are already fluttering about worrying

about everything. But it is very nice to have people

who have been through it and can tell me what to

expect. And that I can talk to about it frankly

without them getting all worried and freaked out.

Tammi,

I had CWD surgery on 5/1/04 and I was out of work for about six weeks.

But unlike must people who have responded to your question I had a bad

case of vertigo, going into the surgery. And it continued post

surgery. Also I worked on my feet and having my balance back was

crucial. I had very little pain through the whole exprience.

Hi Tammi,

I didn't notice any balance issue before the surgery. It might

just have been a matter of time, though, before the " disease " caused

enough damage to notice.

There was a definate learning period after the surgery, and there

are still, many years later, certain motions that throw me off. I am

not that great at walking in the dark either. I guess I'm more

reliant on vision for balance than I used to be. Other than

swimming, I can do all the sports that I used to do (running,

bicycle riding, waterskiing and racquet sports) with little

degradation in skill and no loss of enjoyment.

I would say that the cholesteatoma itself has no effect at all

long term except for swimming and the periodic clean-ups with the

surgeon. Losing the semi-circular canals is a bit of a hit.

Hopefully yours will stay intact.
