Guest guest
Hi I'm a 43 year old Englishwoman and I have had only the one cholesteatoma (thankfully only the one!), but prior to the diagnosis of cholesteatoma, I was diagnosed with Eustachian Tube Dysfunction, Glue Ear, supposed " inverted hayfever " and then, eventually, severe hayfever, which became Perennial Rhinitis (all year-round hayfever) and which they (the medicos) also say is Allergic Rhinitis. Sadly, I suffer all year round and take meds in an effort to control/counteract the allergies. Back in 1981, I think it was, Beechams laboratories here in the UK tested me as my hayfever was affecting my military training (I was a linguist, learning languages in the language lab, which backed on to a field of rapeseed and which caused me severe breathing problems if i was in there in the mornings - we eventually changed the lessons to after lunch and I was much better). Of the 40 tests Beechams carried out on me, I had reactions to some 22 or more allergens... they could confirm the 22, but said to me that those 22 reactions had been so great that they interfered with the testing sites of the other 18 to such an extent that any reactions on those 18 sites couldn't be assessed or verified. I live right by the sea and find this helps - if I go inland, I suffer really badly with my allergies. I'm lucky, though... I've had no recurrence of cholesteatoma, fortunately. Kazzy :-) Cholesteatoma and allergies We received confirmation last week that my son's cholesteatoma has returned (his 4th) and the tympanoplasty done last July has perforated. We saw a new doctor and for the first time, he mentioned having my son tested for allergies. Aside from mosquitoes, he shows no " classic " signs of allergies (runny nose, watery eyes, etc). He had his adenoids out at 11 months of age and they've grown back. He's 10 now, so we'll have them removed again. Has anyone heard of the association between recurrent CToma and allergies? If it proves to be a problem for my son, I'll be disappointed (to say the least) that testing was not suggested earlier. Would love any thoughts on the above. After having the adenoids removed again and the CToma surgery, he'll be at 7 total surgeries. Thanks!!
Guest guest
That settles it! All of us with special ears, move to the seaside! (or Great Lakes in my case). I'm in! For the people with the son on his 4th Ctoma, might want to try laying off all dairy products for a while to see if that helps. Luck to all! May your pain and numbness be minimal! Guest guest
I think you are on to something... it's not so much the allergy part as the Rhinitis (of whatever origin) part that gets ya. Not that I'm an expert or anything. I can tell ya though, that this was absolutely the worst winter I've ever had for congestion. I spent about 3 months straight with a head cold... and viola Cholesteatoma. Heck I got another cold two weeks after the surgery (hoping it's OK). Guest guest
I've heard about people suffering from colds... but to be honest, I can't remember teh last time I had a cold or cough - I never get sick... am so lucky really. I just have allergies and ear infections all the time... I'd rather not... perhaps occasoinally I would swap them for a cold... but what ho ;-) Kazzy :-) Cholesteatoma and allergies >> >> >> We received confirmation last week that my son's >> cholesteatoma has >> returned (his 4th) and the tympanoplasty done last >> July has >> perforated. Guest guest
It's weird, I've never had a winter like this past, don't have a clue what happened. But those of us with eustacion tube issues can run into problems when dealing constant congestion be it from allergies or colds. Fluid traps and gives you infection, constant nose blowing causes eardrum retraction because the pressure can't equalize, ect.... Guest guest
Our otologist was quite insistent about getting our daughter checked for allergies after her ear still had fluid behind the eardrum following surgery. I was skeptical since I had had her checked when she was 2, but he was right-- she had developed allergies to dust mites, cats, and fall weeds. I knew she had a runny nose sometimes but thought she had lots of colds. 10 mg of Zyrtec/day clears up the obvious symptoms, but not necessarily the fluid. For that the allergist recommended nasal sprays (Astelin and Nasonex). It's a lot of medicine for a 9 year old, but the otologist was *really* insistent that the fluid had to be dried up behind the drum or the cholesteatoma would be more likely to return. --Lynn
Guest guest
Thanks for the great info. This is the first time we've had allergies mentioned, and he has his 4th Ctoma in the left ear. May I ask where your otologist is located? I'm in the Southeast and we are traveling to see one in Nashville! Glad to hear the medicines have been effective. My son is 10, so we may be on a similar path. Has your child's Ctoma returned, or has it just been one? Thanks, Sheri
Guest guest
We see C. in Nashville. I think he's an absolutely excellent surgeon, though he's slightly difficult to relate to. But I don't really care too much. I seriously checked out all the Nashville otologists and could also say that Haynes was a close second for us, but is the one who has trained many of the otologists around here (and elsewhere), so we went with him. Plus he has published quite a bit on the topic. He's truly a world expert. He did a one-stage operation and reconstruction with no second look. So far, so good after 1 1/2 years, though the reconstruction didn't work due to her fixed footplate (something congenital, apparently). Feel free to contact me with questions. --Lynn > > Thanks for the great info. This is the first time we've had allergies > mentioned, and he has his 4th Ctoma in the left ear. Guest guest
So GLAD I found you. We live in , MS and traveled to Nashville last week to see DR. JACKSON! I can't believe that you use him also. I found him after extensive research. There's only one otologist in Miss. and Dr. is " Mr. Personality " compared to him. Do you live in Nashville? Getting little ones to bed right now, but will certainly email with many questions. THANKS-I'm thrilled to chat with you! Sheri

Guest guest
I had an allergic reaction to Shrimp at age 32, after eating shellfish all of my life, almost daily. It can happen. I recently saw a commercial for an RX referring to " new " allergies. Good Luck
Guest guest
Go see a Otologist....... Tom Hansen From: dutchnl607 <dutchnl607@...>cholesteatoma Sent: Tuesday, February 3, 2009 11:18:01 PMSubject: Cholesteatoma and Allergies My ENT thinks that Cholesteatoma' a are caused by Eustation Tube problems. He thinks my Eustation Tube is not working properly because of Allergies. I just did an allergy test where they gave me little shots under the skin to see if I would react to anything. When they got to the grasses I reacted big time, I was off the charts. I have been around grasses my whole life. I use to have a landscaping business for years and now I am a PE teacher. I am now taking allergy shots. He wants to cure me from my allergies, not just treat the symptoms. I am going to have my 5th surgery this month. My ENT plan for me is this:-C-toma's grow because of Eustation Tube problems.-Allergies are causing my Eustation Tube problems.-Cure me from my Allergies and my Eustation Tube will work properly.-Once my E-Tube works properly the C-toma won't grow back.Has anyone else heard of allergies being the underlying cause of Cholesteatoma' s? or is my ENT nuts? Guest guest
I dont think he is nuts at all. Both My old ENT and current Neuro Otologist think both of my ctoma's were caused by the same thing you describe. I have very poor ET functon caused by allergies and it makes my ears fill with fluid. It was this fluid and constant infections that led to my c-coma's. They both came with the same exact nswer when i asked so i would have to believe there is some truth to it. In addition to the Otoligist i see an allergist and i get the shots. From what im told they dont " cure " the allergies but they do make your body less sensitive to the allergens so that the reaction isnt as severe. I can tell you for sure that thry have helped me bigtime. I get as lot less fluid buildup and no more watery eyes, sneezing etc. On Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 11:22 AM, s <thequeen.christine@...> wrote: I don't have ctoma, but my ETD seems to be worse during allergy season, and I am trying a steroid nasal spray to see if that makes a difference in Eustachian tube function.
