A Modified Radical Mastoidectomy is usually the CWD procedure. It is a little less radical the the Radical Mastoidectomy. It has to do with how much is removed/altered in the middle ear. I think many of us here who refer to the canal wall down CWD, had a "modified radical" procedure. In that procedure, it is more drastic, makes it more difficult to do reconstruction and you have a life long commitment to follow up checkups and cleanings. But there are benefits too. There is a much less likelihood of reoccurrence with this procedure, and the regular cleanings etc... will ensure if there is any re-growth, it is caught early. Esthetically, it doesn't show much... They usually also do a procedure called a "meatoplasty" which widens the ear canal, which facilitates the cleanings. On some people this opening is more noticeable that on others.

With this procedure, the incision is behind the ear, near the crease. They ground down the mastoid bone till it is smooth, so no c-toma cells can get trapped there, and they remove part of the wall in the middle ear, creating a larger cavity... sometimes called a bowl...

This is the procedure I had done, and you cannot tell the difference unless you look real close. Mine was done in May 2002, and although they told me post operatively there was no chance of reconstruction, my surgeon has changed his mind because it healed so well, and in his words my "ear drum" came back... (don't know where it went, though it was a rebuilt eardrum, so I think it healed well in the place it was to be)... Any way, I am having the reconstruction done on Tues the 13th of April... soooooon....

Hello. Has anybody had a Modified Radical Mastoidectomy? I just had

my 4th surgery for Cjlostemtoma in January went back to the dr, today

and having my 5th one in thenext month, and he mertioned that if

tehre was laot of it still there would I what to have this done...Not

quit undertanding what exactly it is.

Hi everyone... Well I am home and well... and I can hear... even through the packing and bandage... The sounds seemed really loud yesterday, but today they seem a little less so. The procedure took about 2 hours and I was sent home a few hours after recovery.

I really thought they'd wake me up and tell me it was not possible to do this procedure, but they did... and so far it appears that I will hear again in that ear.

There is minimal discomfort. I didn't get to see the surgeon post op, so I am not sure what he used for the prosthetic. The incision on in the front along the edge to the ear opening and there is packing which will hopefully be removed on the 22nd.

Hi Lynn

Glad to hear your reconstruction went well. I guess you won't really know for sure how well it worked until the packing comes out and everything settles down. I hope you can look forward to a new and exciting world of sound - it can even be a bit overwhellmingy at first, if you are comfortable with not hearing. Good luck - Phil
