Guest guest
Hi all, Just thought I would share some good news. I just came back from a checkup by my ear doctor. I now only have to come back for yearly checkups! My 1st surgery was Dec 1999, second surgery Jan 2001. Now I'm down to seeing him only once a year (unless of course I develop any problems.) My left ear is the one that had the Ctoma and it still has a tube in it (place during second surgery). My right ear had a tube put in it during the first surgery which fell out 6 months ago. The right ear has negative pressure in it again. Constant even when I " pop " my ear. He doesn't like that I have negative pressure but since my hearing is good in that ear he's just planning on keeping an eye on it. The left ear, after a prostetic, has variable hearing but most of the levels they test are inside the normal range. So I consider myself a success story. At least for the time being, knowing that the return or beginning of one in my right ear is always a possibility. So take hope everyone. There may well be a light at the end of the tunnel for you as well. Cheers! Guest guest
Hi Jane, Sorry it took so long to respond but isn't being very nice to me right now. Did your doctor talk about reinserting the tube in the right ear? My husbands first surgery for c-toma was, like yours, in his left ear and his first surgery was Dec 1999, the 22nd to be exact. Also like you, he inserted a tube in his right ear. About a year and a half later the tube fell out. We went in to the doctor to have the tube put back in but the doctor was unable to because he had a new tear in his eardrum. His doctor gave it six weeks to heal, then he was going to put another tube in. We went back in six weeks later, and he had cholesteatoma in the attic of that ear (the right ear). I was just wondering if your doctor considered doing this to you, as my husband had the tube to help prevent this from happening in that ear. If only there wasn't a tear in the drum, we wouldn't have had to go through surgeries 3 and 4. I don't mean to scare you and hope I haven't. I just think if there is any way to prevent this, maybe you should do it? Keep us posted. I will check the site regularly as is not sending the emails and new subscriber info I am supposed to get as moderator. Michele > Hi all, > > Just thought I would share some good news. Guest guest
Hi , My doc is going to keep an eye on my good ear. Since I'll be going back every year if a Ctoma starts it won't be able to accomplish much. When he put the tube in during my 1st surgery for the Ctoma in the other ear he did check this one out to make sure there wasn't a Ctoma in there already. He and I agreed that it's a fine balance to keeping a healthy whole (or hole-less) ear drum and preventing possible Ctoma. We will re-evaluate each year I go back (or sooner if I have any problems). I'm not the panicy type, and I'm well informed on Ctoma (and learning more from everyone's posts). Thanks for your input and concern!
