Hi,

Yes, the Valsalva maneuver does in fact work for some. My son started out with a retraction pocket and we did try this for a couple months. Unfortunately it didnt work, and we then had a tube put in, and that didnt work either. We ended up having a Tympanoplasty and a small C-toma was found and removed. Our surgeon has had this manuever work on many patients and that is why we tried it first. Best of luck, I hope you are one of the lucky ones...:)

Sincerely,

Renonda

Hi Juris

It was an intressting question you had for your surgeon. The thing you have is

(after what I know adhesive otit) and making your eardrum getting of one of the

hearing bones with valsava manouver would be quite intressting. Never heard of

it or that it should work. But please tell me if it dose!

My good ear has a retraction pocket and the ear drum is touching one

of the ear bones, stuck on the eardrum as my doctor says.

Is there anything that can be done to move it off the bone?

I asked my doctor about using suction, he said they don't do this as

it is likely to bruise the ear drum. He said once the other ear heals

from surgery I can try the Valsalva maneuver to see if this unsticks

it.

--- Actually I have had it work before. It took a few times of

trying it really gently but in my case it was successful.

Once you got it unstuck did it stay that way or did it get stuck

again? It seems like if I can get it unstuck and I pefrom the

maneuver a few times a day it should help keep it unstuck.

---I was 1st advised to do that years ago. After it worked I was

then told that given my history & the fact I had bad eustachian

tubes I was advised to just make that a part of my day to day life

as a preventive measure. Your doctor may not take that approach. We

all have the c-toma problem but we all also have different other

factors. Ask your doctor when you see him. I would hate it if you

did it & then found out your doctor ddn't approve !! I have never

again had that problem but for someone else it may be totally

different & maybe even harmful.

I also DID NOT do it after any of my surgeries until my doc gave

me the go ahead because of potential harm to the just operated

ear !! So please consult your doctor !!

I wish you luck !!

Hi Kimmie,

My doc said the same thing, 'pop' the eardrum often but I was always told

NOT to do it after surgery untill he gives me the go ahead. My eustacian

tubes never worked right, I always had to adjust for changes in pressure

myself, it never happened naturally as it is supposed to.

Kara,

The method I use is to hold your nose & blow very gently & if

its successful you will feel the eardrum pop if it works. Sometimes

I have to do it several times in a row but I don't do it more than 2

or 3 times. I'll wait & try again later. Don't blow very hard

because thats not good either.

I was told to do this several times a day & have been for 35

years. But always ask your doctor 1st. He may have other methods. &

NEVER right after a surgery util the doc gives you the go ahead.

I hope this helps. I have to do it because my eustachian tubes

are not functional at all !! Good Luck !!
