Guest guest
Ian, Don't use any type of alcohol in the bin - it's a big no no. Or is it air diving you're up to down there, in the G of M - 6 six hours behind us etc. Speak soon and cheers [] Ear Drops Thanks to all who replied to my query on Aluminium Acetate. Please find below if you're interested a reply I aslo got from Ern Cambpell a well known diving doctor over here in the Gulf of M. Hope you find it interesting, Best wishes Ian ----------------------------------- Hi Ian! We wondered where the hell you had gone! Here are some formulae: The solution you need to make up to prevent further recurrences can be made by adding 1/3 white vinegar to 2/3 isopropyl alcohol. A few drops in each ear after diving will help evaporate the water--which sets the stage for the bacteria and fungi. This can be somewhat irritating. Be sure to continue the treatment for 10 full days, regardless. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Aluminium Acetate Ear Drops 8% 8 parts of Aluminium Acetate solution BP with 5 parts purified water, freshly boiled and cooled. Instructions for use 2 to 3 drops should be applied to both ears once a day. If the water you are diving in is contaminated in any way then use the drops before and after diving. The shelf life of the bottles once opened will be one week. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Spirit Ear Drops 50 mls of 95% Alcohol (plus purified water, freshly boiled and cooled) up to 100 mls. Instructions for use 2 to 3 drops should be applied to both ears once a day. If the water you are diving in is contaminated in any way then use the drops before and after diving. The shelf life of the bottles once opened will be one week. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Non aqueous Solution 2% Acetic Acid, in a propylene glycol vehicle containing Propylene glycol Diacetate 3% and Sodium Acetate 0.015%. Instructions for use 2 to 3 drops should be applied to both ears once a day. If the water you are diving in is contaminated in any way then use the drops before and after diving. The shelf life of the bottles once opened will be one week. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Technique for use The head should be tilted to one side and 2-3 drops allowed to fall into the ear canal. The dropper must not touch the ear or anything else. The head should then be kept in this position for about 5 seconds whilst the tragus ( the cartilaginous lump in front of the external ear orifice ) is gently massaged in a circular motion. Guest guest
Hi , Its neither, (no diving!) the question arose because I have a young lady with a very nasty ear infection which has been treated with all sorts by various doctors and medics. At present the ear is very very wet and sloughy I was thinking of using something to dry it out a little like Aluminium Acetate, hence the original question " what was the name of the stuff I used to use for drying out divers ears " We don't have a bin onboard and as you say even if we did have a bin I certainly wouldn't use alcohol in it. Hope this clarifies sorry for the confusion, best wishes Ian S. Remote Support Medics Online http://www.remotemedics.co.uk A site for medics administered by medics. Guest guest
Ian, I'm sure I'm telling you how to suck eggs, but have you considered that the ear is wet due to a fungal infection. Any evidence of white sloughy material in the ear, or multiple small black spores etc etc... There are also some proprietary preparations on the market which are based on acetic acid. I can't remember the name at the moment but will try and lok it up for you. I've used it several times while in Saudi for dermatitis type problems in the ears. Guest guest
Ian, I forgot to mention - if you think that it is a fungal infection you can use Canestan drops or believe it or not any kind of antifungal powder - mycota/myconazole etc etc.. Update anyway- after the Doxycycline she seems to be improving a lot, I think she has two separtate problems, the infection and a form of excema on the distal end of the canal. The infection side looks now to be on the mend, and she is going home on Monday, the excema still needs treating though so I'll refer her back to her GP. Thanks for the advice anyway, (nice to see you back on the list!) Best wishes Ian Remote Support Medics Online http://www.remotemedics.co.uk A site for medics administered by medics. Our doctors used straight peroxide to loosen wax buildup in coalminers ears and my mother did the same with us kids. HTH Di
Guest guest
I know people have used peroxide but really it isn't good for your inner ears. The ear drum and cartiledge in the ear can, over time be eaten away by the peroxide.... a certain amount of wax is always covering the inner ear to protect it - stripping away that protection is a dangerous practice. Ear wax will naturally work its way out and use of a q-tip to gently pick up the wax and remove it is all that needs to be done. Just my .02¢ Cori >>>Those contain peroxide I believe. Guest guest
The main contra-indication I remember with those drops are that they are not to be used when a perforation is suspected. I do also remember the drops being almost painful because they were cold when used... can you rub/roll the bottle in your hands to at least give the impression of trying to warm them, in case that's the problem? I don't know what else to suggest/comment in this respect. Guest guest
, I've given gallons of ear drops and I always warm them up for about 15 minutes by tucking the container inside my sleeve or waistband. My son is always uncomfortable with cold drops when I'm short on time. Hope this helps and keep calling your doctor if you are uneasy, moms always have that special intuition that something is not quite right. Guest guest
We had the very same problem with the HC drops. My son would complain of a pop and a burning, the doc really didn't know why it was happening. We were able to switch to ciprodex. It made a difference, he never complained with the new drops. I also warmed them before putting them in his ears. I set the drops in a small cup with warm (not hot) water. This was OK'd by by doc, the heating doesn't effect the chemical make up of the drops or anything. >From: " chimac030 " <chimac030@...> >Reply-cholesteatoma >cholesteatoma >Subject: ear drops >Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2006 17:46:36 -0000 > >Has anyone had any bad experiences with Gentisone HC Ear Drops, my >daughter is having a real bad time with them saying that when I insert >the drops it's like a bubble in her ears (both ears) that pops and she >is in pain with the drops, she does have a bad ear infection in both >ears, I have consulted the doctor but I am told to continue with the >drops, I really am not happy with this,is this nomal? > > > > > >
Guest guest
Thanks for sharing your experiences with me,it has been very helpful, I am just wondering whether the problem is because she has a collapsed ear drum, I dont suppose that helps? > > We had the very same problem with the HC drops. Guest guest
It may have something to do with it. My son got the HC drops after his first removal surgery, they had to graft an eardrum. His " real " eardrum was attached to the c'toma and most of it had to come out. The doc did a graft and prescribed the HC drops. The drops caused the burning and popping, the graft failed horribly. Now, I don't know if one has anything to do with the other. The second graft went fine and we used ciprodex drops that time with no trouble....So there may be something with a bad eardrum that just doesn't work with the HC drops or maybe we are just lucky to have such special kids(LOL). Our doc was surprised by it and couldn't really figure a reason why, he just prescribed something different. >From: " chimac030 " <chimac030@...> >Reply-cholesteatoma >cholesteatoma >Subject: Re: ear drops >Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2006 22:39:52 -0000 > >Thanks for sharing your experiences with me,it has been very >helpful, I am just wondering whether the problem is because she has >a collapsed ear drum, I dont suppose that helps? > > > > > > We had the very same problem with the HC drops.
