wow, we were told none of that. Miles had no prior to surgery restrictions but after surgery we were told to put vaseline in the ear, put a cotton ball stuck to the vaseline in and let him bath. To be careful but we weren't made to feel a few drops of water would cause major concern.

Good luck.

Gerry,

I wore and still wear even months after my surgery the

cotton ball with vaseline on it and keep a plastic cup

in the shower and put it over the ear when i get hair

wet, rinse, condition then rinse again. I am taking

no chances! LOL! I am used to it now and will continue

it in hopes that I do not have to go through this

again. I go back for second " look " surgery in April.

Most of ctumor was on facial nerve and in mastoid

bone, attic also. No major damage to three hearing

bones, a little to only one of them, but my hearing is

back to normal. If there is nothing when he goes in,

in April, then I should be good to go, but I will

still do the cotton and cup! Best of luck to everyone

on here!

We weren't told that either. Gerry, your doc must be really cautious. We

were told specifically, the night before my sons surgery to give him a bath

and wash his hair, also told to use a cotton ball and vaseline. At this

time, the doc just set us up to have custom plugs and says as long as we use

those every time and take special care to keep his ears as dry as possible,

it'll be fine. Like Jocelyn, a little water isn't a big deal. I can see

where they don't want you to get an infection prior to surgery, but I've

never heard of having to wash your hair in the sink, especially prior the

big event.

Gerry,

I asked who you doctor was because we live in the same area. You gave me the name but I new at that point I did not like that doctor for this very reason. They would not let me wash my son's hair even though it had been years since his last surgery. All of his doc's let him use a cotton ball with vasaline on it. Good Luck!

It seems that there ought to be something that I can wear that will still allow me to wash my hair in the shower. Gerry

That's okay. As long as the surgery works, then I will put up with

a little hassle and extreme rules. They also won't let me wash my

hair for 14 days after surgery. I'm planning on getting a really

short haircut two days prior to surgery. That way I hopefully won't

be too stinky. Anyway, it's the results that count the most. I'll

play by their rules as long as they fix it.

So, it sounds like your son had surgery with this doctor. Was it

successful?

Thanks,

Gerry

The plastic cup sounds good. I didn't think of that.

Gerry,

I hear ya' about getting the best results! However, the results would

probably be the same if you use a cotton ball and still wash your hair. You

are going to have to make adjustments that's for sure, but the rules don't

have to be quite that extreme to get a positive result. At least that has

been my experience. It is such a scary thing, I know how it is, you hate to

do anything that may make things worse. If it makes you feel more confident

to follow the extreme rules, then go for it, but I really feel like life

would be a little easier for you and probably get the same results if you

were able to make less extreme adjustments. That is certainly for you and

your doctor to decide.

Your Doctor is strict. Are you prone to infections in that ear ? I

haven't gotten either of my ears wet since I heard the word c'toma

in Nov. 2005. It's been my personal choice. I had my husband install

of hand held shower unit and I use just a cotton ball and wash my

hear with my head down. I'm used to it know.

At my last appt.(2 months post surgery for the left ear), the doctor

told me I could get it wet and then he shook his head and said, "

Oh, right, your the one who doesn't get her ears wet. "

I don't know if there's any connection here, but I haven't had an

ear infection in either ear even with the surgeries thet're endured.

Alli,

I didn't know about c-toma until a few weeks ago. Prior to that, I

did have recurrent infections, but I have other health problems that

explained the infections (or at least we thought they did). Since

I've seen the ENT and he has given me ear drops, I have not had any

infections.

Gerry,

He did not have surgery with this doctor. He has had two surgeries a radical the first time. He of course has not hearing in that ear and no hope for reconstruction. His previous doctors for the surgery got to old and is no longer doing the surgeries. He is going for his third surgery on March 7th. Because he is a kid and still growing they have to keep doing revision surgeries. The mastoid bone when you are little it no all developed. They took all the bone out at the first surgery but it will keep growing as they grow. C-toma has attached to the new bone each time. Hopefully since he is 13 now this will be the last surgery. His new doctor told me he is past the grow age for the ear.

Good Luck.
