Guest guest
Hello, I don't know how much help this will be, but my c-toma surgeries have all been from behind the ear. I was diagnosed with c-toma in the right ear over 30 years ago at the age of 9. They performed a mastoidectomy at that time. I went through 3 reconstruction surgeries during the next 10 years. Then at about age 28, I had a canal wall down surgery done and the ear canal widened. I have had no recurrence of c-toma in that ear. Then about 4 years ago, I was diagnosed with c-toma in the left ear. Because of my history, my doctor opted to perform the canal wall down surgery/with widened ear canal as the first operation. ( I also had an internal jugular vein that was out of position in that ear that had to be fixed at the same time ). I chose not to attempt reconstruction in the left ear. I now have a BAHA ( bone anchor hearing aid ) for the right ear and a " regular" behind the ear hearing aid for the left. You are doing the right thing as far as gathering as much information as you can from doctors and this group. That information will help you make the best decision for your situation. Best of luck. He does his entrance in the front thru the cancel while the surgeon we are scheduled with does it behind the ear. This doctor said it is just a difference in they way they were taught. The first doctor said he goes behind the ear to make sure he can remove all the cholesteatoma. The doctor we saw today said that both procedures resulted in about the same pain, time off work etc. I would like to hear anyone's opinion on which way is best. This new doctor also suggested putting a tube in 's ear for any future pressure and drainage issues. I do agree with that. He said the doctor we had chosen should do a fine job, as he knows him, and the fact that the new surgeon is over an hour away he thought we should just stay with our original doctor. I would like to see them go though the cannel but is convinced, as the first doctor told us, to get it all out I need to go though the back?? Your experiences and thoughts are most welcome. Thanks again for the support!!
Guest guest
Hi Ilona. Believe me any post from people who have been through this is appreciated. God bless you for all you have been though. I am sure this has not been easy on you. You have been through much more than most it sounds. I think we are leaning to the back of the ear option. His other ear, so far looks Ok, except when allergies act up. He has a loss of hearing but I think if all goes well he will not need any hearing enchantment at this time. I hope all is OK with you now and really do appreciate you and everyone else notes. It is great support!! Guest guest
I had my left ear done in May of 03 and he went throught the canal. He felt he could do this ear that way. I had my right ear done in July of 03 and he cut behind my ear because it was more involved. There was more pain in the right ear after surg., but that may have been because it was more involved. In Jan, the C-toma did come back in the left ear, but he got me numb and cleaned it out in his office. I still may have to have another surg. Who knows if I had been cut behind the ear if things had been different. Most people do have two surgs. for each ear, so no matter what info you receive you will have to make the decision on your own. Conv. to the doctor is a plus. I hope you do well. got a second opioion Well we got our second opinion today and are confused in a way. This doctor went in and cleaned out the ear and then talked to us. Guest guest
I had CWD ( CUT BEHIND THE EAR) When I was 15 and never had any problems whatesoever after the surgery. ( knock on wood). When I was diagnosed with Ctoma in my other ear the first surgeon I saw was going to do it through the canal and from all the research I had done on CWU surgeries, I was very skeptical. When i sought out a second opinion and ended up with one of the top 3 ENT in BC. Canada, I was relieved to hear him say he would do the CWD(cut behind the ear)because the chances of recurrence are less. Now, on saying that, THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE and since I had a CWD about 18 yrs ago and not having any problems, I felt this was the best option for me. Hiope this finds you well. > I had my left ear done in May of 03 and he went throught the canal. He felt he could do this ear that way. Guest guest
I meant that I had a CWD, Which I was cut behind the ear and never had any problems with that. Sorry, for the misunderstanding. > > I had my left ear done in May of 03 and he went throught the > canal. He felt he could do this ear that way.
