Good to see this group out here. It is kind of depressing looking at

all of the websites and just finding horror stories and few success

stories. We are in the middle of this process with my son. He had a

canal wall down surgery and at the same time had his tonsils and

adnoids removed. Long process, 6 hrs or so. The doctor said he

believed he removed all signs of cholestatoma. Hearing after was at

about 40 dcbls. Had the reconstruction done, by another doctor

(other left our health plan) and the doctor said the surgery went

great. Waited for the ear to heal and had him checked again.

Hearing level decreased to about 70dcbls, basically no hearing at

all. The doctor wanted us to wait a few more months to see what

would happen. A month later my son developed an ear affection. The

doctor said the cholesteatoma was back and the ear bones were

probably dislodged. Gave us the wait and see what the body does with

the ear attitude. We decide to get a second opinion, from our

original doctor. He basically told us that the way the doctor

reconstructed the ear bones there were pockets that encouraged

cholesteatome to grow back. He said he kind of went foe the home run

to restore his hearing and he should of widened the canal,

eliminating any possible pockets, and just try and go for a hearing

restoration to about 30 or possibly better dcbls. We switched docs!
