Clay, there are plenty of good people far more vocal than I who will

not doubt have their say in due course, but IMHO (a) you shouldn't

worry unduly about being 29 years old, and ( regarding recovery and

post-op complications, much will depend upon the degree of damage

which may have been caused by the cholesteatoma, its size and, of

course, the competence of the surgeon, and which of the various

operating procedures he or she will pursue.

I'm fast approaching 68, and I had a CWD in early October 2003. My

otologist told me to be patient and warned that it would take three

whole months before I " felt right " . Others, you will hear of, have

theirs and seemingly breeze through feeling 100% after a just a few

weeks, so as I say, there's no one definitive answer to your

questions.

I'm sorry if this sounds as though I'm dodging the issues raised, but

that's about the strength of things as I see them.

Go armed with some information and some carefully composed questions

to the guy who's going to climb inside your skull. Hopefully he will

have a good idea of what's what BEFORE he has you anaesthetised, so

ask plenty and, before I forget - all the very best.

about a year ago I had CWD, which lasted for 4 hours. I was 25 off

work for about 10 days (including weekends). I didn't have any post-

op complications. As was mentioned before, make sure you ask your

doctor lots of questions and try to be as well informed as you can.

My Birthday gift was to have my first Ctoma Op on my brirthday. This

was just under two weeks ago, and although I have had a slight

complication with my Facial Nerve, I am feeling well enough to be

able to start back at work following the all clear from my Specialist

this coming Thursday. He actually said I would have been fine to

start back on Monday, had I not had the temporary FN damage.

This site is a fantastic tool to gain the information that you will

require.

Thanks a lot for everyone's thoughts thus far. I would have to

agree that being here definately has made me more informative as to

what's going on, then before. I know my wife is excited...you think

we won the lottery, but then again, she's not the one having their

head opened up either. I will be sure to go into the doc's office

with so many questions, they'll think i'm in med school or

something. I feel pretty safe where i'm going, seeing that my

doctor referred me to the Ear institute for my state, but none the

less, caution and questions will be with me as well. Just hope the

insurance will front most of the bill, or it's bye bye vacation in

September.
