Guest guest
Katy, yes, I've used the rice bran oil and have noticed a difference. I really like using it. Are you saying your soap is even nicer than before? I thought your bars were wonderful!. Jeanine Jeanine's Hummingbird Soap Works _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Katy Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 4:46 PM Subject: Rice Bran Oil About a month and a half ago I changed my " base " recipe for cp soap by cutting my Olive amount in half and using Rice Bran Oil in it's place (about 20-25% Olive and 20-25% RBO). I can't believe how much nicer my soaps feel! I was hoping that there wouldn't be too much of a difference but I've got to say, I'm very pleasantly surprised! My husband even commented on it without me asking him how the soap felt. I slipped a bar of it in his shower and he couldn't believe how much more lather he had. I always liked the way my soaps lathered before by using an ounce of Castor Oil per pound of soap but now I'm finding that, with the Rice Bran Oil, I can cut my Castor Oil back and have even more lather. Has anyone else tried RBO (Jeanine, I know you said you did) and have you noticed the abundance of lather? My skin feels great after showering with it too. Just thought I'd share in case there was anyone else out there thinking about making the change. Katy
Guest guest
Katy, I've been using RBO for the past few months and to be honest, I wish I had used it right from the start! I still add the Castor Oil, only about 8 oz for an 8 LB batch of soap. I'm so pleased with the effects of lather with the RBO. Guest guest
Me too! I love my RBO soaps. I actually used it to replace sweet almond oil. My recipe still has olive in it. Guest guest
Katy, RBO adds a nice touch -- literally -- to CP soaps. So don't other oils. I love Sesame Seed oil [not the dark nutty stuff]. I never bought in to the adage that lye always wrecks havoc with all oils. Kind of defeats the definition of unsaponifiables, doesn't it??? (((warm smiles))). I play with a lot of different oils and butters high in unsaponifiables and end up with truly luxurious soaps ; ) Huggs, Bekka
Guest guest
Yeah, I'm still using Olive too. My soaps used to be up to 50% Olive but I've cut that in half and use RBO too. Saves alot of money! I don't know if any of you shop at Wegmans but I noticed yesterday that their Olive is much cheaper than everyone elses. I usually try to pick some up when I'm near a BJ's but Wegmans is comparable, just not in the 5 liter containers. I usually grocery shop at Tops because it's closer but their Olive is outrageous! Stay cool in this heat everyone! Katy wrote: >Me too! I love my RBO soaps. I actually used it to replace sweet almond >oil. My recipe still has olive in it. I ran out of RBO, and have a lot of OO that I bought, so I've been using that. I'd totally replace the OO with RBO, except that so many people don't think a handmade soap is a good soap without OO. What's everyone's favorite source of RBO? I went to a farm store once, upon someone's recommendations and it was $22/gal.! I am getting ready to order more base oils and will add RBO to the list! My BJ's sells the olive oil just under $30. I remember when I used to pay around $18 for the same bottle!!!! Guest guest
Hi , I'm not sure where you can find large amounts of RBO but the same thing happened to me with Riceland. I finally checked the tracking # after 10 days (I had been too busy to remember to do that up to that point) and found that it made it as far as Buffalo and then was stuck, possibly due to damage. I emailed at Riceland and she got right back to me saying that they called UPS and they didn't have any information that it was damaged. Finally, after about 4 or 5 days, UPS updated the tracking info saying it was indeed damaged and destroyed. In the meantime, I had asked Riceland to send me another one saying I'd pay for them both if the first one should arrive. Riceland seems to be the cheapest, even with shipping, that I have found. I'm tempted to just pay double the cost to get it from Soaper's Choice just because their customer service and speed is so much better. Check your tracking # to see if UPS put a stop on it. Good luck! Katy Angelicglow () wrote: > Hey Guys, > I remember a bunch got RBO at the gathering. I'm in a bind since Riceland didn't deliver my order from 9/22 yet. Guest guest
If it serves me right the rice bran oil at " Tractor Supply " is a unrefined version of the oil. What is given to the horses is different than what is used in soaps. I would venture to a store and see the printing on the label. Just my two cents worth on this subject. Guest guest
Maggie, One thing you'd have to consider are the NaOH SAP values of the three oils in the mix. They are all very similar, so you may be ok not knowing the proportions of each in the blend. Guest guest
Many have been using RBO as a substitute for the now-expensive olive oil. So, it a good, basic oil for soapmaking. It's also good for hair and skin products. Not many Americans use RBO for cooking, but it's certainly a good oil and worthy of use. Here's an informative website on it: _http://www.ricebranoil.info/_ (http://www.ricebranoil.info/) .
