Celaine;

How are either of your knees? Has anyone xrayed them to see if anything is

obvious there? I know that I hyperextend my Rt knee a lot to compensate for it

needing a Rt TKR once this recent Rt THR of mine is heeled. That abnormal gait

pattern of mine I know can reek havoc with me and seems to change my overall

functional ability from hour to hour for some reason. I guess I am still

working out a lot of weakness of my muscles being a recent THR.

But this is for you and explains why I asked you to check your knees and not

just with xray but their function. Might be you are having some knee function

issues that are NOT hip function issues at all.

FOR EXAMPLE: One time I had taken a bad fall and while I was waiting for a Rt

sided soft tissue injury to heal (which it did in 3 mos time) I had no idea that

I had injured my left knee meniscus (put a hairline crack in it that could only

be found and repaired by going into a minimal form of surgery ie. getting scoped

arthroscopically.

I had absolutely NO pain of that cracked knee meniscus to give me a clue that

that was where my problem was. And no xray would have shown my problem I later

learned. I only thought I got weak somewhere in my lowerbody during the 3 mos

that I was waiting for my Rt soft tissue area to heal and so that I needed to be

made stronger so I did not have to strain so many muscles to get out of the tub

etc. etc.

Anyway, so I joined an aerobics class to " GET BACK MY FORMER LOWER LEGS

STRENGTH " Right??? Well with only one class completed it was that aerobics

teacher who saw that what I was coming there to strengthen was never going to

happen and that I really likely was in need of orthopedic surgical exploration

of my one knee. (she saw my weakness on the little stair steppers). And low

and behold she was right. I am sure I would have been causing body aches all

over if I had had to continue to compensate for that knee which I had NO idea

could cause so much painless trouble for me. Even after it was fixed (no

muscles or ligs had to be cut so I was a new person and still pain free after

the repair) by simply cutting out the jagged fine crack to enable my knee to

have even stablity again, I had no pain. So that was a great mystery solved for

me and one much appreciated to have been found not by me who was living with the

problems it caused but by an experienced aerobics instructor no less. (maybe she

had been a P.T. who gave up that career to raise a family for all I know).

Celaine,

Also I read somewhere that it is not unusual for one having had a THR to

experience one leg shorter or longer than the other after such a procedure. I

asked one therapist (an former years ago one) one time how folks get to know

more about if they have a leg discrepancy and he mentioned something about if I

want to check on that to wear a shortie above knees gown or shorts and have my

husband try to see if my knees and feet seem to be the same length when I am

laying flat on my back with legs comfortably out flat forward and straight

together evenly as possible.

I never tried it but would if I was concerned about anything of any sort.
