Guest guest
Hi there and thank you for the welcome. Are your kids on meds? Our dr advised us to consider one for my son but i would like to see what the psychologist has to say first. Is it common for children with OCD to also have ADHD? Re: Hello..new here. Guest guest
Hi, My 11 year old has had the same problems. We've had improvements by bribing him to wait a while when he feels he needs to wash or go to the bathroom (try a minute at first, and work up). Now we're having the opposite bathroom problem, he's so afraid of the bathroom germs he won't go, and we've had a few accidents. This morning I offered him a treat after school today if he goes at school. > > Helloe everyone, > I am new to the email list, my name is Marie and my son is Nova and he is 6 years old. We are in Winnipeg Canada. We have newly embarked on the road to OCD, and i guess i just wanted to hear from other parents how they have dealt with it. While my son is quite normal, his issues are that he has constant hand washing to the point where they get chapped and bleed, and he has an obssession with going to the bathroom. He thinks he has to pee all the time. He is on the list for a psychologist at school as he is having a lot of issues at school. We are also meeting with a psychologist outside of school on thursday to determine a therapy for him. This is all very new except that the issues have been going on for a long time now. Anyways, just a quick hello from me. > > > > > Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. Guest guest
Hello and welcome, Marie! My child hasn't had the hand washing or peeing problem, but many here have. I'm sure they will have great advice for you. Dina
Guest guest
So sorry to hear about your sons's troubles. Since he has the symptoms of thinking he has to urinate all the time, make sure you research PANDAS and talk about it with your doctor (if you can find one who knows about it) so that you can at least rule it out. Guest guest
Hi Marie! My son (now 18) hasn't had the handwashing or peeing problem but that has been mentioned a LOT here over the years! Have you had a chance to read (online or books, etc.) anything about OCD treatment yet? Make sure the psychologist talks about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and also Exposure and Response (or ritual) Prevention (ERP). More on this at the OCD Foundation website. http://ocfoundation.org If he mentions medication, just know that many children as young as your son (and younger) take medication for OCD. You don't have to use medication, the therapy is the real *key* to beating it and staying well, being able to manage OCD, but medication can certainly help a lot. It doesn't mean a " forever " thing to begin medication although some people do end up having to stay on it. But at your son's age and getting a good therapist to treat him, I think he would do great with therapy. There are some really good children's books about OCD he might like you to read to him too. Let us know how the appointment goes! (North Carolina) > > Helloe everyone, > I am new to the email list, my name is Marie and my son is Nova and he is 6 years old. We are in Winnipeg Canada. Guest guest
Hi Marie, My son(6) just had a severe allergic reaction to a med, so at this time is unmedicated. My daughter(11) is medicated. Both of my kids also have mood disorders, and have been diagnosed with ADHD, but the doctors are trying to determine if it's just part of the mood issues. Many kids with OCD also have ADHD, but not all. Hugs Judy Marie Chicoine <xmissviolax@...> wrote: Hi there and thank you for the welcome. Are your kids on meds? Guest guest
No, he'll wipe forever. He never thinks he's clean. When things are really bad I take the toilet paper out of the bathroom and just give him a reasonable amount. I'm tired of unclogging the toilet. He did go at school yesterday, so he got his treat at home! > > Hi there...wow...well that's quite the turn around. Has your son ever had the fear of wiping his bum after a bm? My son has issues with that and on top of that, he counts how many toilet paper squares he uses and freaks out if the number is higher than what he is used to. Usually, this is accompanied by a fear to completely wipe and then to flush the toilet. >
Guest guest
Jackie, get a surgeon who does quad sparing surgery so you don't have to go through tough PT afterwards. Your hospital stay will be shorter, and recovery faster. All you need to do is try to build up your quads before surgery, they are probably weak from limping around. My doc sent me home with an electric ice machine that works great. Plan on a couple weeks of pain and pain pills, walk a lot afterwards. I'm 8 months out and went dancing in high heels tonight, could have done it at 5 months. Hollie LR TKR (6 months apart) Dr. Coon '08, '09 > Having 1st TKR in feb........any suggestions or good info? Guest guest
good luck! I am new to the site and have had a complicated recovery from the TKR. It will make a difference if you are having the one with the smaller incisions or the " traditional " slice down the middle of the front of the knee. They told me (and were correct) that I would not be discharged until I was able to go up and down stairs. Most will suggested you set up a temporary bedroom on the first floor of your home until climbing the stairs does not leave you exhausted. Will you have help afterward? Do you have a timeline from your surgeon? I asked for some milestones he expected and tried to get as much info prior to surgery, but when I began having seizures in the recovery room, all time lines were shot to sh*t. I'd say have a plan B (like somebody who can be there 24x7 for a week or two), but there are loads of people on here who were up and at WORK in just a few days! Here's to you being one of the latter!
