Hi Connie :)

I just had my surgery on 9/2! My first advice for you is DON'T worry :)

Let's see....ummm....oh one thing I wasn't prepared for was the wait.

My scheduled time was 10:15, however I didn't actually go for the

surgery until 2:00. I think this is typical though. It was a cold wait

for me...you might enjoy having your favorite blanket just for snuggling.

The list from CI hear was a good one!

>You may feel great after surgery, but feel the anesthesia affects on

the 2 and 3 day, again....normal.

>Make sure you have regular tylenol, I found this to be all that I

needed after 3 days and for some people that is all they needed, period.

>The no bending rule is a must. I learned how to pick up the laundry

with my toes, LOL :)Also sneeze if u must, but only with your mouth

open! Tums....I had a lot of indigestion afterwards! and a HUGE appetite!!

>You might want to go to the library and grab some good reading material.

>Reclining chair is going to be your best friend, so hope you have a

comfy one! :)

If I think of anything else...will jump in...I'm sure there will be

others throwing you some do/don't advice :)

When is your date?

Hi:

After surgery I had a burning sore throat from where the breathing tube was

put down my throat. The tylenol 3 and a recliner that kept by head up took

care of most of the discomfort but only lots of cold applesauce and popsickles

soothed that irritation. After a couple of days, it subsided.

You are so brave! I hope you do well, even better than the first time.

It was suggested I have this surgery done in 91, but I declined and have

just done the best I knew how. I have often thought of what it would have

been like if I had had the surgery, but I have yet to do well with surgeries

and don't even do well in the interim when I am sposed to be healing.

I'll be thinking of you, for one and I hope that you get well really fast.

I know what you mean about those pain meds, can't live without them but

getting them seems to be lots of work sometimes.

GA

BTW I actually know a woman who had BOTH hands done at the same time. Can

you imagine that??? I can't but she told me she did it and her daughter took

care of her and she was sitting in the same room when the story was told and

backed it up. YIKES! Thinkofit!

Welcome Tammy! I have 3 friends that have had GBS and they have all gained back the weight and more! Now they are stuck...........with the band the fills give you some control. Also I like the idea of losing the weight slower, it gives your body a chance to keep up. I've seen GBS patients look like gray ghosts! With any luck I will be right behind you. Hi Tammy,

Your first question: Yes, the liquid phase of the post op diet is hard but thank goodness it is only for 4 weeks! Yes, you want to eat (unless you are one of the lucky ones with restriction right away). You will find that you notice more food commercials on TV and that everyone around you is enjoying food and you can't. But what keeps you going is the thought that this is only temporary and that you are doing something for YOU! After you have a fill you will see that you can eat what everyone else is, just smaller portions. Some people have a hard time with bread and rice. I am lucky, I don't but I eat those things in moderation anyway.

Yes, please line up a fill doc or plan on going back to Dr. A for your fills. It is so important to stay on top of getting your fills. How do you know when you need one? If you aren't losing 1-2lbs a week, if you can eat more then 1 to 11/2 cups of food at a time, if you are getting hungry one to three hours after a meal, you probably need a fill. I have met people online who say "I don't get it, I haven't lost any weight in 6 months, I can eat like a horse, this band doesn't work!". Well the band doesn't work without proper restriction and only YOU can know if you need a fill. I have had 4 fills in 11 months and have lost 106lbs. My fill doc is pretty aggressive, my first fill being 2.0 cc's. You can also see my fill schedule on my website.

Hello Fellow Californian's,

SF Bay area here. I had my surgery on 8/11/05 and have now lost a

total of 58 lbs. Not as fast as some of the younger ladies but I am

thrilled to bits not to be a size 24 any more. I'm now wearing a

baggy size 18. I'm 5'3 " and did the surgery for my 50th birthday

which was the at end of July.

My 'two cents " - do it now while you're young and get healthy for

the rest of your life which you'll actually enjoy! At 50, I bounced

back right away, though I did take some additional time off work for

work related reasons (and because I could!)

I helped out at my sons school, did some work around my house and

just relaxed for a few additional weeks. I even went camping with

our church 1 week after surgery!

Do it while you're young ladies, you won't regret it

Oh yeah - I also know a lady who had GBS and your " gray ghost "

comment fits her to a tee!

Yes, It is kind of hard the first few weeks for many

but they go by very quickly in retrospect. We have to

learn a lot of new habits and ways of thinking in a

short time and thank God for the band which lets us

know when we lose our way! Also, the band is

adjustable which gives us the ability to get control

of our runaway eating habits! The gastric bypass is

just so much more risky and has many drawbacks even

though you can lose faster. In the end the results

will be the same for both procedures but I will be

able to get fills or unfills and the gastric bypass

person will just have to live with what they have or

go back for additional surgery. I too, know several

people who have had the gastric bypass surgery and

have gained all the weight back and more. I also know

two who have had to go back for more surgery to

readjust and one person who had tears in his stomach

as a complication and he has spent a lot of time in

the emergency room. So I don't know if it is worth it

for the quick weight loss or not!

Hi Liz, I haven't talked to you in awile but I just wanted to write and say

how proud I am of you. Girl, you must look amazing!! We will definately have

to get together someday and see all the changes. We probably won't even

recognize each other. As for me I am almost to goal but my band gets tighter

every pound I lose if that's possible. I've never heard anyone say that before

and I always thought it was the other way around (looser as you lose weight)

When I first got my fill back in October things were fine. I mean I was tight

but I could eat small amounts and do Ok but now I'm down to not holding much

down at all. Some days are better than others but I'm starting to feel like I

need an unfill. I just hate to when I'm this close to being at goal weight. By

the way I weigh 152 with my goal being 145, Starting out at 235 back in August.

I've lost 83 pounds in 6 months so I'm thrilled with the results. I would not

change anything about this process and I'm so glad to have found Dr. Aceves. He

is truly a blessing. Anyway I just wanted to write and catch up and wish you all

the best my band buddy. Talk to you later, Sheri Wilkins

Hi Penny, Thanks for the feedback. You know, as I was reading your post isnt GBP the surgery that Randy (The Dawg) on American Idol had? Because I watch that show all the time and he did loose alot of weight but he hasn't seemed to loose any more in a very long time. From everyones posts I think I have chosen the right procedure. I do have another question though. YOU GUYS CAN TELL ME AT ANYTIME TO STOP WITH ALL THE QUESTONS!!! At the bottom of your posts you all have I believe its your pre-band weight/half way point/goal?

If you want to read about my Mexico experience, please check out my web site (in my signature) and click on the "Mexico" link on the left.

Good luck!

Hi Tammy,

Actually you are about right with the numbers. The

first is where you started the middle one is what you

weigh right now and the last is your goal weight. I

just lost 2 lbs. so my middle number should be 186

(woo! woo!). My intermediate goal is to lose 50 lbs.

by the end of my first 6 months which is only 1 month

away! I hope I will still be motivated for the rest

of the year! Best wishes to you. Oh, I don't watch

American Idol too much so I'll have to pass on that

question. Keep asking away on your questions--the

more you know the better you'll feel going into

surgery!

Dear Sheri -

Speaking of "you must look amazing" 83 lbs in 6 months! WOW - I'm so proud of you!!! You really took all you learned from Dr. aceves to heart and ran with it.

I appear to be stuck once again. I've still only had the one fill (11/25/05) but like I wrote earlier - after I got sick in January my band really tightened up and unless I stand up to eat - I can only get tiny amounts of anything down so breakfast is a Slimfast and lunch is mostly soup. At dinner I try to eat whatever I cook for Dan & Ethan but only get a tiny amount. I wake up hungry almost every day but the thought of food doesn't appeal to me till I see my coworker scarfing cereal at 8:30 at her desk.

I've been working out at CURVES at least 3-4 times a week faithfully and am still losing the inches - but the scale moves so s l o w l y ... this morning I weighed 223. My size 18 jeans are getting baggy but the one pair of 16 I have won't go past my knees!!! My new winter coat is a size 14 though... go figure! What size are you into now? Maybe on my next trip to SoCal I can drop by and pick up a new wardrobe from the things you've shrunk out of!!! Sure would love to see a picture of you now... hint hint hint - you do still have my email address don't you?

By the way, how is your hubby taking the new you? Has your family in Kansas? seen you yet? Give me the whole story please...

Hugs and CONGRATULATIONS - YOU'VE DONE GREAT!!!! Liz

>> Hi Liz, I haven't talked to you in awile but I just wanted to write and say how proud I am of you. Girl, you must look amazing!! We will definately have to get together someday and see all the changes. We probably won't even recognize each other. As for me I am almost to goal but my band gets tighter every pound I lose if that's possible. I've never heard anyone say that before and I always thought it was the other way around (looser as you lose weight) When I first got my fill back in October things were fine. I mean I was tight but I could eat small amounts and do Ok but now I'm down to not holding much down at all. Some days are better than others but I'm starting to feel like I need an unfill. I just hate to when I'm this close to being at goal weight. By the way I weigh 152 with my goal being 145, Starting out at 235 back in August. I've lost 83 pounds in 6 months so I'm thrilled with the results. I would not change anything about this process and I'm so glad to have found Dr. Aceves. He is truly a blessing. Anyway I just wanted to write and catch up and wish you all the best my band buddy. Tracie, Thanks alot and I'm so happy that you got your band fixed. I read the

getting on the computer is not very easy. Anyway I've been following your story

just get it repaired. I hope your liquid phase moves quickly and you have much

Liz, I know exactly what you mean by having to stand to eat. I've been doing

that for months. I eat my dinner

standing at the kitchen counter. Forget about breakfast and lunch is usually a

protein shake. I do like those

ones from Wal-Mart that talks about and the best part is they are cheap.

I'm still struggling with head

hunger. Sometimes I want to eat so bad especially when I smell something I'm

cooking for dinner for the kids.

The other day I took them to Mcdonalds and had to smell the fries all the way

home and knew that I couldn't eat

them. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing that I will get to eat this

stuff again when I get my unfill.

That's what I love about this band. Anyway, I'm wearing a size 10 now and

sometimes still a 12 depending on how

it's made. Levi's run smaller than other jeans it seems like so I still have to

get a 12 in those. I did see my family at

Thanksgiving and at that time I had only lost about 40 pounds. They definately

noticed but it really wasn't any big

deal. They still don't know about the surgery so I just told them I was on a

diet and I haven't seen them since

so they'll really get a surprise in July when we go back to Oklahoma. My hubby

hasn't really changed much. He

never gave me grief about my weight so he really doesn't treat me any different.

He does get a little more

jealous than he used to which just thrills me. He's never had a weight problem

so he really can't relate to what

it is like. Anyway you are gonna be one hot mama when you get where you want to

go because you have been

so good about working out. I have not been so good. I'm not trying to make

excuses it is just so hard with a

2 year old around all the time. Of course the up side is I'm chasing him around

so that helps to burn a little. I'm

not too flabby with skin except my stomach and my upper arms. I call them my

bat wings and my stomach is

probably always gonna be like that becaus of having 3 (10 pound) babies. I wish

I could go tone up at curves but

no child care and my hubby is a pilot so I never know when he's gonna be home.

About being stuck, I recommend

going and getting a big old calorie soaked malt once a week or week and a half

and just blow your calories for

the day. I have done that every time I get stuck and it works every time.

Your body will adjust to only burning

a small amount if that's all you eat every day and don't change it up once in

awile. I have to do the malts because it's

the only thing with that much calories that I can get down. I only do it once

in awhile but it really does work to reset

your body at least it does for me. Maybe someone else will have another

suggestion but for me it has worked

beautifully and I really haven't had too many plateaus and when I do get them

they don't last long. Anyway, sorry this

got so long. I just wanted to catch up and hope to see you again someday maybe

at the reunion I keep reading

about. I am so computer dumb so I don't know how to post pictures or anything

like that but hopefully I'll

learn someday. Can't wait to see yours!! God Bless and Good Luck on breaking

the plateau, Talk to you soon,

Sheri Wilkins

THANK YOU SHERRI, :) Tracie Bartek Aledo, Texas DOB 2/25/06 248/194wilkinsjl@... wrote: Tracie, Thanks alot and I'm so happy that you got your band fixed. I read the messages every day but rarely post anything mostly because I have 3 kids and getting on the computer is not very easy. Anyway I've been following your story and it is so reassuring to me that if something ever does go wrong then you can just get it repaired. I hope your liquid phase moves quickly and you have much success this time around.
