I agree with Jackie wholeheartedly. Are you having your revison done by the

same surgeon? Have you consulted with any other surgeons in your area or

even elsewhere before you decided to do that? New bone growth (or not) onto

the prosthesis can clearly be seen in an Xray three months after THR. From

reading your experience, if it were me, I would not hesitate to get several

other professional opinions from other highly regarded surgeons.

Other things that might be helpful are bone resorption testing and bone

growth supplementation. There is a lot of information on the internet you

can read about these things.

Hi ,

I am so sorry to hear that you are going through all of this. Your question

(about the 6 months xray) is a good one and might make me think about having

another doc have a look at things.

~ Prayers winging your way ~

I had THR Dec of 2008. Never have been able to get rid of the pain. It is

different pain than before surgery and not as bad. I still can't walk more

looked great and sent me to a back specialist to evaluate/treat back issues.

After a couple months of PT (in addition to all I had after hip surgery),

and 2 injections, he decided the pain I was having wasn't coming from my

back and sent me for a pelvic hip CT. It showed possible loosening of the

stem. So,13 months after THR, back to OS I went with this new info, and he

took more x-rays and came in to tell me that, yes, the stem is loose, and

has always been, but not because anything happened to cause it, but that it

never had the bone growth into it like it was suppose to. Could he not tell

at 6 months that this could be a possible problem? Now I get to have another

hip replacement not even 2 years later and this time they are going to route

out the inside of my femur, so they can put a larger stem in with a

different surface on it. Pray for me that it turns out like it's suppose to

this time! Has anyone ever had an outcome like this?

I would agree to get different opinions. After I found out the bone had not

grown to the stem, I went to two other surgeons in addition to the one who did

the initial surgery. I ended up going to a different surgeon than the one who

did the initial surgery. However, I still don't know why it didn't work

initially. The bone grew around the cup, so I do know my bone would grow to the

titanium.

Although it is frustrating to face surgery again after such a short time, there

is a very good chance it will be successful. When you compare what we have gone

through with the multiple surgeries many of the people in this group have have

endured, it is not that difficult. I have a great deal of respect for the people

in this group and they have helped me to have the strength to go through

multiple surgeries and keep a positive attitude.

Years ago I was given the sales pitch and a sheet of pre information about the

titanium dental implant procedure and costs which due to being considered

" cosmetic only " would have been a hefty one time personal cash output

(thousands)and all of which was totally NOT covered by any insurance.

The informed consent literature stated that I would pay for the screw to be

inserted onto the dental bone and if my bone did not grow around to adhere to

the screw in the bone within the time alloted I would have to pay fully for the

procedure to be done all over again as if it was a first time again. And there

were no guarantees of a first time success just a statement that most folks do

adhere the first time around and if not the first then the second time. All

this was prior to the lab making the tooth that was to screw into the titanium

receptacle once it was secure enough to accept the false tooth.

That concerned me. I feared the chance of my not adhering and/or without any

dental insurance oversight I figured there was too much of a risk for me to have

a non adhering first experience. I don't know if any dentists give the second

chance free if first does not adhere. I just knew why I could not afford to

accept my first ever offer of a dental implant.

At least with the Hip Implants most of us DO have insurance and/or insurance

oversight.
