Guest guest
Morning to all, My doctor just prescribed Elavil to me for my back pain. I've only been on it for 3 days.....any unusual things I should expect in the way of side-effects? I've noticed it makes me tired already. Any info that anyone could give me would be much appreciated. I'm also on an anti-depressant called Celexa....don't know if this will interfere. Ciao! Guest guest
I don't have any trouble with Elavil now. However I used to have a dry mouth all the time, etc. I take the Elavil at night and use it as a sleep aid. So I get the added benefits from that. On a real anti- depressant dose of Elavil waking up in the morning is pretty hard but on the pain management dose it isn't too bad. I did have another problem at a slightly higher dose 100 - 150 mgs. I use to have muscle spasms throughout the night in my legs and back. It was awful. It disappeared with the 75mg dose and it works a lot better now. In fact I doubt I could live without it. Guest guest
Natasha, I have a curiosity as to why your doctor would give you a medication and NOT tell you if it would interfere with your anti-depressant. I would think this is VITAL information to know before you introduce any medication. I support you in your effort to make sure you are taking medications safely. Call your pharmacist or doctor to find out that information, escpecially the long term effects if you need to be on both. The other thing I do is go online and read the drug medication print outs on line so I can know what the doctors forget to tell me or may genuinally not know. It pays to research when you are combining meds........that said ...it is only my opinion, I can be outspoken I know. Guest guest
I take Paxil for depression. The Elavil is usually at a very low dose for pain management. So in my case it doesn't have any effect. I asked about this a long time ago. Elavil in the dosages that have effect on depression won't work on pain. The dosage that works on pain will do very little to help with depression. However you should always check with the doctor or pharmacy. I've noticed it makes me tired already. A little dry mouth, but mostly the tired feeling. I don't have a problem getting up in the morning (not from the med anyway!) but I sleep very soundly. Before taking this, I had tried almost everything and had gotten no relief. I also was not able to sleep,I couldn't get comfortable, no matter where I was sleeping. So for me the Elavil is wonderful. Guest guest
I used to take Elavil for sleep therapy but I could not handle the weight gain. I was also " foggy " in the mornings. I have since switched to Zyprexa. Zyprexa is an antipsychotic but at low doses it works it well for sleep. For me it works better than the Elavil did. I thought I would throw this out there in case someone has problems with Elavil and needs to try something else. Guest guest
Well to be honest with you I don't get sleepy with Elavil. If I have to fall asleep and I am in a lot of pain I take 4 - 10mgs Flexeril. Bang out goes the light in a few hours. However waking up in the morning is very difficult. Usually I sleep very late when I have taken it. I am wondering if Zyprexa works on pain? I really have never heard of it so could you maybe fill us in? Guest guest
Hi, I was on only 10mg of Elavil for sleeping aide and fibromyalgia pain. It did help with sleep, but I don't think it was high enough to help with pain. I did experience horrible blood, guts, and murder nightmares on it. My doctor said I should up the dosage ..apparently, I needed higher dosage to reach a threshold where the nightmares would stop. Unfortunately, my doctor could not communicate that to me and I stopped all together and found that Soma (a muscle relaxer) put me to sleep if I took it at night, so I used that. Guest guest
As far as I know, neither Elavil or Zyprexa have any pain relieving effects. It is the increased amount of sleep/improved quality of sleep that acts to reduce the pain. When you sleep better, your body is able to repair itself and therefore reduce the incidence of pain. , the generic name for Zyprexa is Olanzapine. Jolene, I also had bad/weird dreams on Elavil. I am glad to be rid of those! Both Flexeril and Soma are muscle relaxers and would help reduce pain. I've had Soma before and don't recall it making me sleepy. It just shows that we are all different! Guest guest
I cannot take Elevil or anything like that. They make me so shaky and keep me from sleeping. Now I list them as being an allergy so no one will order them. ===== Jeanette __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Kim, the narcotic drugs kept me awake at night... or woke me up every hour or so.... I quit taking them about a week post op (against doctor and visiting nurse advice) and have slept much better ever since. I took Extra strength Tylenol or Advil or alternated them when I needed something for pain, or before physio. I had THR and not TKR, but narcotics do not agree with me... at least not the version I was taking. I hope you can find a solution that works for you,
