Guest guest
I haven't had the surgery yet but this is very disappointing to hear, for sure. Did you have the type of surgery where muscle is cut, or not cut? Were you " better " at any time in the 7 months since surgery? Perhaps others here who have already had the surgery have ideas on this. Lynn I can at least pray for your recovery. > > Hi. Guest guest
--- I had a similar problem with my original THR. Went through all the cortisone injections into the bursa, physical therapy,it band stretching, etc. Finally at about 7 months we did the bone scan. They also took x-rays along with the scan so the radiologist could compare them. Found a loose femoral stem component. When I took all the information to the Revision Specialist he claimed he could see the loosening in the x-rays that were taken at the doctors office at 6 months... which the original doctor did not see. So you also may want to take all your info to a ortho that specializes in revision surgery also. Good Luck. Rich. > Hi. Guest guest
Rich thanks.. Tell me when they did the bone scan, how long after the surgery did they do the original bone scan..? Did they give you a reason for the loose cap..? was it surgery error or just one of those things.. I did have a pretty big fall about a month ago, but was having basically these symptoms prior just not as bad. Im assuming that you had revision surgery then. How long did the recovery from the revision surgery take..? Was it worse than the original or similar etc.. thanks for your input.. Im guess that this is likely the case with me too.. thanks for taking the time to write... Guest guest
Lynn.. thanks.. Despite the current situation, prior to surgery I couldnt sleep without pain.. Although clearly I think I have a big road ahead, Im still glad I did it.. The overwhelming percentage of people dont have these issues. Who knows why Im where I am.. But I would still do it again.. Yes im sitting here with an ice bag on my butt in pain but I would still have done it.. Thanks for your prayers.. my surgery was a bit more of an invasive technique as I wanted to go that route to have a better chance at success. So go figure.. I would see someone who can do the one where they go in through the front not the side. BTW they dont really cut too many muscles anymore.. no matter which way they go. Actually they only cut one.. good luck.. Re: problem with total hip replacement 7 months out.. ideas please.. I haven't had the surgery yet but this is very disappointing to hear, for sure. Guest guest
---Chuck the bone scan was done about 7 months after the original surgery. I did not have a loose cup, I had a loose femoral stem, but the bone scan should show if either is not healing properly.Recovery from Revision was a little longer because they cut the femur open to remove the stem. He was afraid if he kept banging to try to get it out it would fracture the bone and the healing is much longer then. I still do not have an answer as to the reason but I keep asking. Recovery for me was about 6 months because I had a fairly physical job. I would say 3-4 months for a light or sedentary job. I would highly recommend seeing a revision specialist who deals with these problems everyday. They know what to look for. Best of Luck. Rich. > > Rich thanks.. Guest guest
Rich thanks.. appreciate the time to answer. I was told that 7 months was too soon to do a bone scan by one doctor (coincidently the one who did the surgery..) dont know if thats an issue or not but anything now is worth a try.. thanks so much again for taking time to answer. Guest guest
Chuck and Rich Are your stems press fit or cemented? Mine was cemented and the doc did not have to cut the femur to get it out. Recovery from the revision was easier than the original. The stem is now longer and doing fine. But I still get to the point that I can not put weight on it. Usually happens after I overdo things and sit to rest for too long! I bet a " normal " person would have the same problem! Guest guest
--- Sue my stem was press fit. You would think it would be harder to remove the cemented ones but I guess even though they are (press fit) considered " loose " they are still attached to quite alot of the bone. The way he explained it to me was they can tell by the sound after doing it for so long. It gets to the point where it is safer to do a controlled cut (osteotomy I think) then to accidentally fracture it by banging. Then it is like putting a puzzle back together and takes longer to heal. With my original surgery I was in the Hospital for 3 days and Rehab for 2 days. With the revision I was in the Hospital for 4 days and in Rehab for 5 days so for me Revision was more difficult to recover from > > Chuck and Rich > > Are your stems press fit or cemented? Guest guest
Rich Now I have proof of what my OS said. He does not like the press fit because they are harder to remove. I guess the cement is not has hard as the bone. And with the cemented stem you don't risk fracturing the femur when you put in the press fit. Now I feel a little less " old fashioneded " with my cemented stems! Hope you continue to do well.
