Guest guest
Hah..well I " m taking Oxycontin, so...I " m going to hurt, without the acetaminiphen....and the other stuff. I'll be working again with my pain management doctor..already put him on notice..to control it but yes, I was also thinking that by the time the cortisone completely wears off, I'm going to be in bad, bad shape, with both hips bone on bone. That's true of all surgery because they don't want excess blood loss during surgery. Of course after joint replacement one is given blood thinners because of the increased risk of blood clots. There are effective pain killers that contain no aspirin (or other blood thinning agents) which your doctor can prescribe for the week before surgery. I regret that I didn't ask for a prescription because it didn't enter my mind that my OTC aspirin and Advil were doing anything to help with the pain since I was in so much pain anyway. LOL. The last week I literally had to think about whether I could make it from my car to the back of a store when I was running errands to pick up some supplies. Of course the increased pain level certainly dispelled ANY thought that I shouldn't go through with the operation ha ha. But looking back I would definitely have asked for a pain killer with no blood thinning agents for that week before surgery. I just didn't realize how bad the pain would get without aspirin and by the time I did, I didn't want to go through the hassle of seeing the doctor. Guest guest
Anything containing NSAIDS, which would include Vicodin and Percocet and Oxycontin, is out because of bleeding issues. Guest guest
No bleeding issues, other than those brought on by the NSAIDs I take as part of the Oxycontin. Just have to stop it all before surgery to cut down on surgical blood loss. In a message dated 8/3/2011 8:30:28 P.M. Guest guest
Why didn't your surgeon give you something that didn't contain aspirin . Some pain meds are better than nothing. I had to take them as I had 5 joints go on me more or less at the same time, I would have been in dire straits if I hadn't been able to take medication, -- Re: JOINT REPLACEMENT > > Ahhh..that is good to hear since I need both hips replaced. Guest guest
I was already taking 1000 mg of alieve, and percacet and vicadin didn't help my pain any more, so I had to stop alieve cause it thins your blood, even alieve only took the edge off I was in so much pain I could not walk much on it any more so a week of no meds was rough On Wed, Aug 3, 2011 at 6:54 PM, maryanne.waspe1@... < maryanne.waspe1@...> wrote: > ** > > > Why didn't your surgeon give you something that didn't contain aspirin . > Some pain meds are better than nothing. > I had to take them as I had 5 joints go on me more or less at the same > time, > I would have been in dire straits if I hadn't been able to take medication, > > > > > -- Re: JOINT REPLACEMENT > > > > Ahhh..that is good to hear since I need both hips replaced. Guest guest
I'm not sure what your bleeding problem is...I'm on coumadin for life. I do take Percoset before PT, don't know what I'd do without it! It does force a PT/INR blood test more often to make sure I'm at therapeutic levels. Guest guest
That is one reason why I am not keen to have the other knee replaced even though it needs to be. I take the equivalent here of coumadin and coming off that and some of my other meds and then getting back on them all is not much fun. Also I ended up after a few days with nothing but Paracetamol for pain as the pain meds were too hard on my stomach and the pain was severe for quite a while. I felt more ill with the knee than with the cancer or heart problems! Judith > > I'm not sure what your bleeding problem is...I'm on coumadin for life.
