Guest guest
Hi Louise, I decided that at 4 weeks after my knee replacement done 10/6.10, I was going to switch from Percocet to Tylenol or Naprosen for pain. I wanted to be able to drive without the Percocet and my doc said driving was OK at 1 month. After the first month, I only used Percocet at night if I could not sleep due to pain. At the time, my husband was going through problems with his back and knee so I needed to regain my independence. Guest guest
Here I go with my opinion. I think we are WAY too wary about adequate pain relief here and now. Yes yes I know that a certain small proportion of patients become addicted to narcotics, but that IS a small proportion, and I do NOT see why the rest of us should be forced to suffer because of that. I¹m willing to take my chances on this one. Luckily for me I have a foster son who¹s an orthopedic surgeon who prescribed me a whacking great bottle of percocet in addition to what my much more cautious surgeon gave me. I understand that you¹d like to get off percocet, and I¹m sure your doctor would like to get you off too. However, if you are still in pain and you want to do pt effectively you need to take something for the pain. I had an unusually quick recovery, yadda yadda, I didn¹t even NEED pt (they fired me after two sessions) but I still took pain meds for about three months after surgery. Tapering off of course as the thing healed. I hope you can get your doctor to cooperate. It¹s all ancient history now. Doesn¹t hurt, I¹m running all over the landscape (figuratively, I am not allowed to jog). I¹m 65 and had the care of my hyperactive 2 year old granddaughter all day yesterday, and she was on OVERDRIVE. No nap too. What a cutie, all the shop folks were in stitches, and she was more tired when I got her home than I was. Ha ha! Guest guest
I am with you, . Doctors do seem to be a little up tight about the pain meds, but then, they don't feel the pain, do they. We are not all going to turn into Charlie Sheens. That said, you must be really careful about operating machinery when you are on these meds. Driving is really a no no. So, I took them as long as I needed to, about three months, and let my husband do the driving. I do realize that others may not be as fortunate as I was, but so be it. Take the pain meds if you need them, but don't drive! All the best, Joan ________________________________ From: Foley <sefoley@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Sat, March 5, 2011 10:49:04 AM Subject: Re: Scar tissue and pain Here I go with my opinion. Guest guest
Good point about the driving. Even if Vicodin, for example, doesn¡¯t affect you badly, if anything goes wrong, even if it wasn¡¯t your fault, you¡¯ll be blamed for it. (No one told me this when I broke my arm, and I drove all over the place! Someone should get this information out!) No one should drive on percocet. It¡¯s got Oxy in it, it¡¯s a really heavy-duty painkiller. When I was taking it I knew without anyone telling me to stay away from driving.
