Guest guest
Hi...just sitting around resting and feeling kinda lousy and waiting for the stupid bandage to come off (this ENT leaves it on for 2 days, my previous ENT took it off after one day) & reading the anesthesia commentary with interest. I had surgery yesterday in a very small, rural hospital & had been quite concerned about their anesthesia department. My ENT assured me, however, that when they solicited him to relocate here (he is the only ENT on Virginia's Eastern Shore) one of his requirements was that the anesthesia be "state of the art". I've had trouble after previous surgeries with post-anesthesia, no breathing issues, but I felt horrible - intensely restless, jumpy, "strung out", just wanted to lock myself in my room. Also had quite a bit of nausea in the recovery room. I thought it was just me, as my surgeries were done in an upscale modern hospital. Well, lo & behold, the anesthesia this time was great. No nausea, no wierd awful feelings, & I was out of recovery very quickly. Hearing you guys talk about it, I'm thinking we ought to check out the anesthesiologists as carefully as we check our ENTs. It makes a world of difference when it is done well. Well, Mom just brought me a chocolate milkshake since it hurts to chew. Take care all -
Guest guest
Hi Lori, Glad you came through it OK. The tympoplasty is the repair or replacement of the eardrum and the mastoidectomy is the procedure they did to remove the tumor. It sounds like all went well if you were only in there for 21/2 hours. It is funny you mention the anesthesiologist and not being able to breath. I had that same experience the second time I had laser surgery to remove a kidney stone from my ureter. It scared the hell out of me. I have had 4 or 5 operations for different things like gall stones and knee surgery and I always tell them about that bad experience and I have yet to have the same thing happen. (I would prefer not to have surgery at all but it seems to be a reoccurring theme in my life for the past ten years) Anyway, thought I would let you know that we are still here for you. Get some rest, you will feel a lot better after a bath. You should be close to going stir crazy about the middle of next week. Just take it easy and don't push yourself. Dave My Surgery Hello, everyone I made it thru..LOL. I will give you all the details that I know as of right now..Ok my surgery was scheduled for 7:30 am yesterday and I didnt go back until around 8 am. I was in there for 2 1/2 hours. They wheeled me in the operating room and I was placed on the operating table. I didnt much care for my anetheaiaolgist..He gave me some meds and said that I would start to feel HEAVY?? wasnt sure what he meant by that but within seconds I couldnt keep my eyes open, and then I couldnt breathe..it scared me to death. I was asking them to help me because I couldnt breath..but I dont remember anything else..I was out. When I woke up I was in the recovery room and my mom and preacher were beside me. I asked the nurse for something for pain and they gave me 2 shots of morphine and some demerol and my mom said something else but I dont know what that was. But I was still in pain>>>UGH!!! After I left there they put me in a room and I was still hurting and asked for some more pain meds so she called the Dr and gave me more morphine. I could feel my ear drainging...warm stuff...EWWWW but of course I have a HUGE bandage on my head and I cant take if off till tommorow..And I will be glad to get it off. I was VERY dizzy when I tryed to get up and go to the bathroom and the ride home in the car was awful..I felt like we were going about 100mph and weaving all over the road..Kinda made me sick feeling. But as soon as I lay down I feel ok..the dizziness goes away. I got to go home about 4 or so. and I have just been laying around sleeping most of the time. I am still dizzy when i get up fast or am up for a long time. And my ear still hurts..It is a weird pain I cant really explain it. I can kinda feel the incinsion behind my ear..feels sore but mostly my head hurts and some ear pain. I am taking my pain meds..every 4 hrs and it kinda helps..It doesnt take the pain away completly. I just want to take a bath and wash my hair...LOL But I will have to wait till tomm to wash my hair..And I am sure that will be fun.I do know that I had a tympoplasty* and mastoidecotmy* (*spelling) with the removal of the c-toma. Is the tympoplasty like tube in the ear drum??? He said that he was going to enlarge my ear canal a little and he was going to try to save my ear drum..but I dont know if he did eiter..LOL I go back tues for a follow up..so I will ask about that. He told my mom that there would be no chance for reconsturction because he said that all the recontructives he has done the c-toma has came back and he doesnt like to chance it. He said that I will be able to hear a little but it will be worse than before the surg. And I dont know if it had eroded the bone between my ear and brain..that is another ?? I will be asking. He said that I would be able to get a hearing aid..but I am not forsure I will do that. I have not been able to hear out of that ear for years so unless it really bothers me then I probally wont. They are VERY expensive and we dont really have the money for that...OHH I forgot to mention that he did monitor my facial nerve..I have a small dot on my face and the nurse said that was from the monitor and they also put some kind of greasy stuff in my right eye..not sure why..The c-toma is on my right side. Well I sure hope everyone can understand this..I am sorry it is not organized and my spelling is not great..LOL PAIN PILLS. But I wanted to post about the surg for everyone. And I know that everyone with upcoming surgs will be glad to read about it. If you all have any questions I will try to answer them ..what I know. And I will post agian after my appt tues for the follow up..Take care all!!! And thanks for being there for meXOXOXOLori

Guest guest
That must have seemed very scary, not being able to breathe. I wonder why that would happen. I do know that during surgery, you are given a drug to paralyze you so you wont move during the operation. This is why they put the E-Tube in your throat, and they attach you to a ventilator. If they didn't do this, you could actually move while the doctor is operating... imagine... Anyway, they shouldn't be injecting the medicine that paralyses you until you are unconcious... If that is what it is, the anaesthetist must have been a little too rushed! While they were setting up the stuff and telling me I was about to go to sleep, and to take deep breaths, I mentioned that I was waiting for the taste of garlic. I've had that before, and it is a curious thing with some anaesthetics that you can taste garlic. Any way I had 2 anaesthetist for the last surgery, one was a resident, and they told me that the " menu " had been changed... I laughed as I dozed off... But there has been some changes in the drugs used, and I do know they put you to sleep with gas, and keep you asleep with gas and drugs... and they also paralyze you. Guest guest
I think it is far more important to check out the anaesthesiologist. They can kill you quicker than the ENT guy! Guest guest
Hello All - Talk about direct and to the point, Lynn. Although, I have to agree, I've had some very weird reactions to anaesthesia as well. I always have lots to talk to the anaesthesiologist about before I let them do anything. Lori and - glad to hear all went well. Get lots of rest - that makes a big difference. - > I think it is far more important to check out the anaesthesiologist. Guest guest
Hi Garry It's sounds as if the op was pretty successful. I reckon the taste will come back within a few months. Best of luck with the recovery. Phil
Guest guest
Hi all, I had my left TKR 2 weeks ago on 5/22. Came home the following Monday and have been progressing well. I became dehydrated after a few days at home and was very weak and tired for a few days but recovered from that and things are going well. The pain really hasn't been nearly as bad as I expected and I haven't had to take anything for breakthrough pain at all after the first few days. I'm icing and elevating the leg a lot and it seems to be helping. Also doing the exercises a few times a day. This morning I'm getting the staples out and hopefully the knee won't be quite as stiff after that. I think for the most part I've had the same concerns as most of what I've read, constipation, lack of appetite and trouble getting good sleep probably the worst. Sleep has been improving lately. Thanks to all for pre op info and if anyone has upcoming surgery and has questions please feel free to contact me/ Jeff New Hope, PA
Guest guest
Hi Jeff, Thanks for giving us an update. It's good to hear that you are doing so well and haven't had the degree of pain that you were expecting. That is something that I'm concerned about. I'm scheduled for a Right TKA on August 20th. Both knees need to be done but I've opted to do them one at a time. The surgeon thought that would be best, too. He has suggested a 10 to 12 week interval. I'm rather eager to get them both done and over with. I'm thinking more like 8 weeks... Anyone have any comments/considerations as to how soon one should have a second knee done? What length of time is best to wait in between? Thanks for letting us know how you are doing, Jeff! Shirley in NM
Guest guest
I have stayed overnight before, but because it was an exploratory surgery that took a long time to complete. It was my first Cholesteatoma surgery so they didn’t know what it looked like in there yet. After that I always liked same-day surgery because I feel more relaxed and comfortable at home. Guest guest
I find the best way to calm my nerves when awaiting surgery is to distract myself. the other thing is to think of it in terms of at least the wait is nearly over. To me the waiting is the worst. Good luck and God Bless Mela lisalumjorgensen wrote: > > > Hi : > I am getting nervous. Thursday is coming fast. I know I need to do > this. Guest guest
Hi , The morning of my second surgery I was a bit more nervous than usual, so the nurses gave me some kind of shot. After that ... no problems, I cruised right through - they could've told me I was gonna have a brain transplant! Just re-listen to all those Bib of the Sciences lectures - that should keep your mind off of things. They will likely produce a few good naps. Best of luck on Thursday.
