If you keep the swelling from happening in the first place by wearing

compression socks, this won't happen. It's not like taking a

diuretic. Also, you need to differenciate swelling from synovitis with

what might occur from poor circulation. They are two totally different

problems. A little swelling in the synovium can be the source of a LOT

of pain. Think of a badly sprained ankle. Curiously though, even a

lot of doctors confuse the two.

  • 2 weeks later...

I would like to hear from others about compression stockings. I

believe that I will have to wear them from 6-8 weeks. My daughter will

be home for 2 of those weeks but after that I am on my own. Were you

able to get them on yourself? My surgery is Jan 4.

Luckily my OS doesn't think they serve any purpose so I was spared the horror -- there was a recent study that showed that they are of no particular help in avoiding clots provided that one is "relatively" active after surgery so there is a trend towards NOT having patients use them -- especially since there is a LOT of non-compliance once people leave the hospital.During the first day or two at the hospital when my movement was minimal, I did have electric pumps on my calves which helped circulation and after that I was moving. I was prescribed Lovenox which is an anticoagulant which can be more safely administered than heparin since it doesn't require blood tests which heparin does.Begin forwarded message:From: KeimM43@...Date: December 28, 2007 6:21:05 AM PSTJoint Replacement Subject: Re: Compression stockingsReply-Joint Replacement I was able to get them on myself after that time but it was very slow and not easy. I had to wear them for 6 weeks. I hated them.           KeimSee AOL's top rated recipes and easy ways to stay in shape for winter.

The dreaded TEDs. I wore them until my follow up at 4 weeks and then

ceremoniously burned them in the fireplace. Ugh! I hate anything on my

feet while I sleep and was already uncomfortably forced to sleep on my

back. The stockings only added to the issues. I had to wear them day

and night but took them off once a day to wash my feet and them. Ask

for a second pair if you are smart. I could get them off by myself

but no way could I get them on properly. And if they were not on just

right they bothered me even more. If I would have had to deal with

them on my own I may have cheated quite a bit. I do not believe they

were necessary but they do scare you into wearing them. I moved around

a lot and was not a high risk patient but the consequences of a

possible DVT made me put up with the discomfort.

My Dr. did not give me the stockings to wear. Instead he told me to

take two baby asprin a day to reduce the chance of blood clots. I guess

it is working ok. Just 10 days in. JJ

Mind you it was not a fast mile, but a mile none the less. And take your pain meds 30 min before you start. Yes it can be done. Not everyone is in the hospital for 4 days after. I bet swimming might have to wait six weeks or so.... Do not get in a pool while your incision is not COMPLETELY healed. Good Luck and let me know if you have any more questions.daiseyyy4 <daiseyyy4@...> wrote: I'm having my left hip replaceed. You were walking a mile after 4 days? You just made my day.

I like to swim. Does anyone know how soon that is allowed?EleanorJoint Replacement , iamflustered insocal <iamflusteredinsocal@...> wrote:>> First, what are you having done hip or knee?> I had a THR and there is no way I could have gotten those stockings on myself for the first week after surgery..(My husband took such good care of me and was the master at getting those darn things on!)> My surgeon said that I only had to wear the stockings until I was walking a mile consistently. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe I wore them for about a week or so because walking was my therapy and I was walking atleast a mile daily starting about the 4th day post-op. Getting rid of those stockings was a huge incentive to keep up my therapy regimen. Plus I had my surgery in August, so

putting on stockings in the summer heat was not fun!> Good Luck!> > daiseyyy4 <daiseyyy4@...> wrote:> I would like to hear from others about compression stockings.
