Hi Pat,

I think most of us are different with the numbness thing. I have none at all in

that area of my knee and plenty on the other side from disk problems.

Subject: question for everyone

To all of you who have had replacement surgery.....    Does the slight numbness

at the surgery site ever totally go away?  My knees were done last August and

when I touch the scars, the slight numbness is still there.  I can live with it

fine but was wondering if it would eventually disappear completely or is this

something that is there forever.  (If I remember, I will ask my surgeon this

same question at my yearly checkup visit in a couple of months.)

Pat, I had hip replacement not knee but mine has disappeared along at least

95% of the incision

which was about 6 inches long.......and it is gradually turning into a fine

white line instead of the

wide pink line.......time does make a big difference....done 6 months ago

like anne......

lateral approach.........

Barb,

I have not been a member all that long but yes, this seems to be a great place

to hear all experiences and opinions. I wish I had known about this group

before my surgery last summer. There is so much to be learned from those who

have already gone through joint replacement surgery.

Hi Pat,

There's a good section on my hip replacement scar (done in 2009) that's still

numb.  I expect it's going to take a good long while for feeling to come back.

I won't even mention my knee - too new! :o)

Good question...I'll be interested to see how folks respond.

So decided to really see where I am numb. The scar up at my hip is actually more

tender and has alot of feeling. I am numb on the outer portion of my thigh all

the way down to my knee. Surgery was 8 weeks ago.

You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.

That doesn't sound bad to be since you only had the surgery a short while

ago. Good luck with your healing.

I had THR (right) in Nov. 2008. The numbness around the incision site is still

there.

Does not bother at all, but it is noticeable (in the shower and when towelling

down)

I believe it is something to do with nerves and nerve endings that get severed

as the surgeon `goes in.'

As a kid I had a Stainless stell pin inserted just below my right knee joint to

facilitate traction to rest the hip joint, (I had childhood Perthes Disease of

the right hip) and to this day (I'm 60) the area around that is numb, but again

no issue.

BTW: great job on the hip, I should have done it years ago, if anyone is

wondering whether to go for it or not, my advice is JDI – Just Do It.

PeteM,

I agree with you. Your body tells you when it is time for hip or knee

replacement surgery. If you put it off, you are only going to get worse. For

me, my double knee surgery gave me my life back. I am 64 and am living without

pain again. It took a lot of time and effort but was worth every minute of the

journey.

I've had this numbness around the incision since 2004 when I had my hip done and

weird feeling when I touch my leg and if I accidentally hit my incision on

anything, it still hurts.

I have some numbness around the incision, but I just had my surgery 8/2. My

surgeon made sure I understood that one of the possible side effects of this

surgery can be some numbness that lasts forever. Still, best decision I have

made. I feel so much better than before the THR. Now my job will be starting PT

and eventually getting off the pain meds.

If your question is does the numbness go away, my answer after 1 1/2 years is

no.  That said, what I have been calling the " ace bandage " effect seems to have

lessened a bit.  It is still there, but I don't think about it much.   I do

still have fear of falling, and as it is rather wet today, will not be doing my

Wednesday morning tennis club.

All the best, Joan

My knee still has quite a large area of numbness and the scar is sensitive but I

am only three and a half months out. I think it is normal when surgery cuts

through nerves and the feeling doesn't always come back. I have a fairly large

area of numbness in my armpit and down the inside of my arm from breast surgery

more than two years ago and it remains the same. Judith

Oh my goodness? " The Ace Bandage Effect! " I am 3 weeks from my second knee

replacement and I was noticing that the edema makes me feel like there is a

tight bandage around my knee. I guess that is what you are talking about. Those

words are great descriptors.

BTW, at 21 days, my scars (from minimally invasive TKR) are almost healed. My

knee is practically straight (just at -2) and my flexion is at 95 degrees. It is

doing better than my first TKR. I still worry that I will have to fight

adhesions again. Yesterday my PT was rocking my knee up and down while I sat on

the edge of a massage table, when all of a sudden she jerked it into a bend.

OUUUCCCHHH!!! I cried like a baby. She gave me a heat wrap which eased that

excruciating pain. I know that brutal PT can work so I guess we all have to

deal with that. Sincerely, Devora

Hi Devora,  As someone once said, no pain, no gain!  PTs can be brutal.

However, I think the pain is worth it in the end.  A close friend of mine

complained when her PT tried to get her leg straight, and the result is that id

never happened.  Now she doesn't understand why she does not walk as well as I

do.  Keep up the work!

All the best, Joan

I feel quite relieved to hear about the ace bandage effect.I wondered what that

feeling was and have no one to ask here really. Its hard to explain in another

language. It seems to be going off now and only happenes some of the time. The

knee still feels too warm sometimes too but after nearly four months I have

finally reached the stage when I can sit down with it bent and it doesn't hurt.

I was also interested in seeing someone write about the incision below the main

one as I didn't know what it was for. It was on my agenda to ask the surgeon on

my next visit. Looking on the XRays I can see that the leg is straighter than

the other one now. An elderly woman fell in the supermarket today and when I

went to help I still had to bend from the waist to get down to her though.
