Maybe I'm just being impatient, but when will I be able to have a day that I'm

not in pain every waking minute?  It's only been 9 weeks, but it sure makes me

irritable.  It is muscle pain, mostly below the involved knee.

I had mine done 13th August this year (yes it was a Friday too, but I'm not

superstitious!). So just over 3 months. At your stage I was still in a lot

of pain, especially shin and calf pain. It's gradually got less, now it's

mainly the 'ace bandage' effect, and the odd ache and pain, especially if I

overdo things. I'm told that the pain I had was mainly due to swelling, and

that walking would assist the dispersal of the swelling and excess fluid.

Hope you will feel happier soon.

Hi ,

That sounds awful. I¹m hoping that soon you will not even remember that you

have a bionic knee. Being in pain every waking minute at 9 weeks doesn¹t

sound right to me. What does your doc say? ³It will pass with time² I¹m

guessing....

Have you had any massage or other body work on the legs. That can really

help with muscle pain. As can acupuncture etc. We tend to be in pain,

tense up and so reduce the oxygen flow causing more pain, and so on in a

terrible cycle. So if you can break the cycle of pain, even with a

reduction or temporarily, that might help. Even using a hand held massager

could help. Also being in the water helped me a lot, especially the hot

spa. I didn¹t do steam baths but that would also help relax the muscles.

That assumes you are cleared for that kind of heat.

Are you doing any stretching? That could also help.

Take care, , and I hope this subsides. Soon!

Best,

Jackie

The doctor had to tighten up my MCL & straighten my leg as it had begun to

bow.  I also have an atrophied calf muscle.  My therapy ended 2 weeks ago, but

I'm on a maintenance program indefinately at home.  I tend to do more than

prescribed though.  A heating pad is helpful.  I just wondered how long I

could expect the pain.  I haven't been able to walk a WalMart store yet

either.  I'm just very impatient!  I'm planning on having my family for

Thanksgiving this week & will do all the cleaning & cooking myself.

When I lay down at night, I'm very restless and can't get comfortable for

hours.  I sleep well for about 4 hours.  Frustrating!

I had a TKR 7 weeks ago and I am in pain 24/7 also.  i stopped the Norco, which

was hard, but my doctor wouldn't prescribe anymore, and I can see why.  I

weaned

it down to 2 tablets a day, then stopped.  I just went through a horrible week

of chills, diarrhea, nausea, restless leg syndrome and anxiety.  i never want

to

take that stuff again.  Right now i am only on Mobic and Tylenol.  I was

wondering the same thing .  At what point does the pain stop, at least

during the day..  I am going back to work in 10 days

This is probably out of order, but may I ask why, given the givens here,

that you will be doing all the cooking and cleaning on Thanksgiving this

year? You don¡¯t have daughters, sisters, sisters-in-law, daughters-in-law,

granddaughters? All your family members are men, and all the men in your

tribe are born without thumbs (or, legs?). Without any women, how did

you-all manage to reproduce? How do these people manage to eat the rest of

the year?

I¡¯m perfectly well but I¡¯m frankly getting tired of doing all the work for

my tribe on Thanksgiving (why is it never at my daughter-in-law¡¯s house?)

and I think they¡¯re sort of catching on, because both my youngest daughter

and my daughter-in-law are making rather fulsome requests about what can

they do to help. I¡¯ll certainly be taking them up on it.

You should not be doing this entire job yourself. Actually, you shouldn¡¯t

be doing any of it. You know this perfectly well. Everything else failing,

this is why God invented restaurants, or at least take-out.

Like F, I am somewhat astounded that you have mentioned that you

will be doing all the work for Thanksgiving as if that was the only

way it could be - even though you describe yourself in a good deal of

pain -- especially when you over-exert.

Perhaps it's time to have a talk with the next generation and

formulate a new way of celebrating family holidays. Assuming your

children aren't total louts, I would think that simply explaining that

you are in pain and don't feel able to do it all this year should

bring about some suggestions to retool.

If your home is the only place that makes sense to gather, perhaps

they can chip in for a cleaning service before or after and you all

can figure out how to make the food.

Entertaining people is exhausting even for those who don't have issues

- between cleaning before, prepping, cooking, serving and then clean

afterwards.

Actually, no, I don't have any daughters, sisters, sisters-in-law,

daughters-in-law,

or granddaughters.  I had 3 boys & none of them are married.  I have an aunt,

but due to back pain issues, she isn't reliable to help.  I bought the turkey,

ham, & desserts already made.  I'm only having to make the sides.  I will pull

a bar stool up to the counter and sit during the preparation.  My husband would

help with the cleaning, but I prefer everything CLEAN and not just the dirt

smeared around.  :o)  There's no decorating this year either.  Then we do it

all over again at my house for Christmas.  :o/  All shopping is being done on

the internet.

Doing all that work is certainly not going to reduce your pain level or

promote your healing!

This is a good time to let go and let others take care of you. You don¡¯t

even need to find a solution. You can just let everyone know that you are

not able to do thanksgiving this year. If no one else wants to take it on,

there are restaurants. Or you can always celebrate with a quiet dinner at

home (take out is good!) and a nice walk in nature to reflect on the

importance of your health.

But you may find that there¡¯s someone who would love to do this but has

deferred to you because this holiday has been your domain.

Take care, and all of us women who take on too much and forgot to

learn to ask for help!

Peace,

Jackie

Hi

>>Actually, no, I don't have any daughters, sisters, sisters-in-law,

>>daughters-in-law,

or granddaughters.

I sympathise with the work you're expected to do! I have two daughters,

neeither is married, and although they can sook for themselves, I dont think

either of them is up to doing the big festive meal yet! If you are only

doing the 'sides' could you ask your sons to have a go at one each? Send

them a recipe! Or reduce the number of sides so that you have less work -

I'm sure they will appreciate the fact that you have made a real effort

despite being temporarily handicapped.

Don't wear yourself out though - you are entitled to have a good time

celebrating, too! Remember, the dust is there for a purpose - it protects

the furniture <g>. Perhaps you could get the men to clear away and wash

up!

Happy Thanksgiving!

As you recognize, Jackie, this is just me talking to myself. :)

The pie does not have to be perfect; anyone who doesn¹t like it need not eat

it. The floor may not be clean been to my daughter-in-law¹s house lately?

She¹s not likely to utter a complaint. And as for my daughter¹s apartment,

the less said the better. (!!)

Everyone really just wants to get together and enjoy each other. If I

stress out over the whole thing I¹m ruining it. It¹s hard for me to learn

this.

And I¹m sticking to my opinion that no one who had major joint surgery in

September should be masterminding this thing. , please please don¹t

get hurt and set your recovery back, no one in your family wants this.

You¹re already in maybe more pain than you should be: no family dinner is

worth making it worse.

You're probably right, .  It's just 2pm and I'm dying.  I have allocated

1 chore & 2 dishes to prepare per day, and that while sitting in a bar stool.

I've already informed everyone that we would be very scaled back this year.  I

have purchased ready-made also - very taboo here in the South.

Don¡¯t hurt yourself, that¡¯s all I¡¯m saying. If these people love you (which

I assume they do) they¡¯d be grief-stricken if they thought this holiday set

you back!!

Remember, the dust is there for a purpose - it protects

the furniture

That's funny!  I'll have to remember that one.

I am a firm believer in dust protecting the furniture. Woe to anyone who moves

it!
