I believe that is the one they are putting in my right knee joint next week.  My

doc is with Triangle Orthopaedic Associates in Durham, NC and knee replacements

are his specialty.  I am hoping for the best outcome!

, I'll be interested to hear about what goes on at the conference. I had

a chance to check out the Faculty list and it is very impressive. I have come in

contact with two families from Britain with the same underlying genetic

condition as Makenna. One of the families surgeons (2) are listed... both from

Edinburgh. The oldest child had full spinal fusion - she's 12. Her curve reached

116. The younger boy has had growing rods, but currently they removed them and

he's in a brace. So maybe they'll use some of this info :)

I was also happy to see that Dr A from San Diego is attending. He's a very well

respected spine surgeon - worldwide. While his focus is on surgical correction,

he does give casting it's kudos...and he was once at Phili Shriners. Not sure if

he was there after they were casting or not. Keep us posted on the

consensus/debate!

Good luck and safe travels!

Hi

Good luck with this. We live in Oxford so if we can be of help please let us

know.

In case it is of use - Oxford's orthopaedic hospital (The Nuffield Orthopaedic)

only has a 2d casting table. We beleive the only table for 3d correction in the

UK is at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore (approx 50 miles from

Oxford) dating back to the days of Dr Mehta. Their casts look like the US

ones,You can check out pics of Abi's casts in the photo gallery (only the 1st

one was in Oxford) but are applied by plaster technicians rather than doctors.

Any interest you can get in casting from UK surgeons would be fabulous. As one

surgeon told us, you could get all of the top surgeons from the UK in one

average sized living room so theoretically they could all influence each. If you

are looking to get interest here the way forward is probably through NICE who

make recommendations for health treatment here in the UK.

In the unlikely event that Dr Mehta need a child with IS for demo etc Abi is now

4 yrs and in a brace so there is access to her spine.

I hope you have a good journey and that your talk goes well.

Sue (mum to Abi cast for 21 months and now 8 months in brace)
