Guest guest
Hi , I'm just curious as to what you feel you need to do at this point in pt that you can't do by yourself in a gym. I understand that you had complications prior to surgery which probably slowed your progress some. Many people like the structure of pt rather that doing the exercises by themselves. Either way I wish you the best of luck in your recivery. I had bilateral TKR July 2009 (7/16 and 7/20 to be exact). I had PT 3x weekly through the November, then went to 2x weekly the first week of December. I have PT 2x weekly for two more weeks, then drop to 1x weekly for the last two weeks of January. At that point, we will determine if I need to continue with PT and at what frequency. Everyone is different regarding how much PT they need for how long. My case involved severe contractures prior to surgery, lymphadema related swelling, and a case of cellulitis in the left leg which sent me to the hospital for four nights at seven weeks post-op. I'm in the USA and have good medical coverage through my place of employment. However, I only have 60 PT visits per calendar year on my plan, which I exceeded some time ago. I haven't gotton a bill for the " over-60 appts. " yet. I am trying to get an exception approved for insurance to cover those additional appts. If I have to pay for them myself, it is money well spent in my book. > First TKR April 2009, second July 2009...I am still going to physiotherapy at the hospital 4-5 days a week. I live in Canada so don't have to worry about what will be covered. > Chris > ------------------------------------
Guest guest
Diane, Some PT exercises that I have to do are: sit on a stationary bike and push the pedals at the bottom of the curve back and forth until you feel stress then go back the other direction like trying to balance yourself. NO going over the top or making a rotation. (that would kill you I am sure). Then I have to do heel slides (3 x 30) where I stretch my leg out then flex my foot and slide my heel toward my butt bending the knee. Then I sit on the edge of the table and dangle my legs over the side. I take the foot of the good leg and put it BEHIND the foot of the bad leg and push it upward until it is straight out or until it just starts to feel uncomfortable. After that I do the opposite. I take the foot of the good leg and put it ON TOP of the foot of my bad leg and slowly push my bad leg back toward the table until I start to feel it. (3 x 30). I was told to do all the bending exercises together and all the straight leg exercises together not mix them up. My PT spends about 20 minutes each visit (out of 1and 1/2 hour session) manipulating the knee, isolating the knee cap and " rocking " my leg back and forth. This is done prior to any exercises to loosen things up. I hope this helps. I would be interested in hearing what other people have to say on the same issue. Guest guest
Thanks. How long is it since your surgery that you can't use an exercise bike? Hi Jeff, I realize your question was not directed at me, but I thought I would answer it anyway. :-) At PT at the hospital, I use a NuStep machine, which is not available at my gym. I do not have enough flexion to use an exercise bicycle. The therapist also 'hog-ties' me...I lay on my stomach with straps around each ankle. The straps are connected to ropes which are connected to a frame above my head (like the head of a bed). there is also a pulley involved! I alternate bending my knees against the resistance of the other leg. The other main exercise that is done there is that I sit on a very high chair with my feet dangling about a foot above the floor. My TKR ankle has a 10 lb weight around it. I flex and dangle. those are the main ones I think! Guest guest
Hi Jeff I am 10 wks. since surgery and cannot use an exercise bike. My p/t say I am close, but that I need better than the 112 rom that I have. When I get on it and try, it is very painful. Last week I managed one rotation before not quite screaming " I'm done! Guest guest
Hi Adrienne, Did you have quad sparing or traditional surgery? I wonder if this is what is making such a difference in recovery times. I was riding a recumbent bike about 3 weeks out and others in my pt were pretty much on same schedule. Guest guest
Hi Adrienne You may try raising the seat on the bicycle. It is easier, and least painful. I found that as I pushed through this with the seat higher, I could start lowering the seat little by little. It is a great help getting more of that ROM we are all working for. Plus, it's a good muscle builder. Dorie Madsen TKR 9/22/09 Hi Adrienne, Did you have quad sparing or traditional surgery? I wonder if this is what is making such a difference in recovery times.
