Guest guest
My right hip was resurfaced in 2007 and my left knee replaced in 2008, I have recently got into walking and can easily walk for one hour per day – is this too much as I want to do more? I am 57 years old. Regards, Bill
Guest guest
I've never heard that one can walk too much -- one hour is probably less than many people walk in the course of daily activities. Walking is generally recommended as the best exercise for hips - my OS tells his patients walking is the best form of PT. Of course, wearing good supportive shoes is very helpful as I think they really cushion impact on the body -- I can really tell the difference between walking in " good " shoes and walking in dress shoes. Guest guest
No, I don't mean the usual walking around that everybody does but grab your coat, lets go for an hour none stop! > > > My right hip was resurfaced in 2007 and my left knee replaced in > > 2008, I have recently got into walking and can easily walk for one > > hour per day – is this too much as I want to do more? Guest guest
I am walking at least 1 hour a day at a clip (not usual around the house, shopping etc.) and my knee was done 12/09. As it has only been 4 1/2 months, I do rest and elevate when I get back from the walk, but I feel this is the best and least hurting exercise, after the stationary bike. However, that is a bit boring, is it not? The aim is to get to 10,000 steps. That should take about 2 1/2 hours of steady walk. Try for it! BTW, I am 64 and size 8P. Certainly older than you! Guest guest
That¹s great! Just listen to your body and you¹ll be fine. If you find that there is a strain or pain after increasing your time, pull back a little and build up more slowly. Or build up in increments, maybe 15 minutes at a time, and go for it! Guest guest
Thanks for that. I am despondent as I was a cyclist (Cat 1 full on) but can't ride now as I have not got the bend in my knee (I have~90 deg) so I thought I would try walking but didn't want to wear anything out! I feel I could run but I don't want to damage anything - do you think I could? Thanks Bill > > > > > > > My right hip was resurfaced in 2007 and my left knee replaced in > > > > 2008, I have recently got into walking and can easily walk for one > > > > hour per day – is this too much as I want to do more? Guest guest
Hi Joan For a while I was riding the bike 20 minutes at a pretty good clip, and then walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes also going pretty fast. After about 3 days I got so stiff and my knee swelled up considerably. I quit exercising for a few days to let my knee recover. I'm 6 months out from my TKR and like you I am also 64. It sounds like you also had problems with the bike. Have you found that you can resume the bike? Dorie Madsen I am walking at least 1 hour a day at a clip (not usual around the house, shopping etc.) and my knee was done 12/09. Guest guest
Thanks for that, very interesting. Regarding my Knee, I tried everything including a Dynasplint for 6 hours a day and a manipulation under GA and got narda. I am going to see another surgeon in Toronto so perhaps he can redo it. I don't know how that usually goes second time round but not riding is hard for me, lifechanging, I have gained 30lb now…lol! Guest guest
Thanks Lynn, I tried that and fitted shorter cranks to so the pedaling circle would be smaller but it's still too much, I think you need 120deg to cycle properly, darn that knee!! Guest guest
Hi Dorrie, No, I don;t have trouble with the bike. I just find it boring. I am planning to get on my real bike this summer, but use knee pads just in case. In case you missed my earlier blogs, I AM a tennis player.(Notice the insistence?) My goal is to get on the court May 4 to hit, and start playing doubles in June. I am still having discomfort and can bend about 115 without someone pushing it. I am over 120 degrees with the therapist. I intend to go to therapy till they can get me to 130. Now, if the swelling, stiffness and deadness would go away............. All the best, Joan ________________________________ From: " TrainedYorkie@... " <TrainedYorkie@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Sat, March 20, 2010 2:12:50 PM Subject: Re: How much walking is too much? Guest guest
I would think that if you can do it and it feels good, then continue! I usually put in at least 5 to 6 miles a day all total. And I am 63, but as a nurse, don't have much choice since I am still working.I don't do more than a couple of miles at once, though. > > I am walking at least 1 hour a day at a clip (not usual around the house, shopping etc.) and my knee was done 12/09.
