I understood what you meant by walking for exercise -- Meandering

around and stopping and starting is not what I think of as walking for

exercise but at the end of the day the movement is the same in terms

of the joints to some extent.

I was just pointing out that walking is a completely natural activity

and there is no reason not to walk for an hour -- or more.

If I thought my new hip wasn't up to my being able to walk for an hour

at one time at a cardio pace, I think I would shoot myself LOL.

Hi Bill,

I think Jujulabee's response understood that.  Are you asking because you're

starting to have a problem?  I think as long as you are in good walking shoes

and not walking in pain (too much is never a good thing to try to push through),

walking is the best PT we can do on a daily basis (plus all the walking we do

around the house doing our chores!)  Good for you!

No, I don't mean the usual walking around that everybody does but grab your

coat, lets go for an hour none stop!

Running or jogging is more " controversial " in terms of whether it

shortens the life span of a replacement.

FWIW, there was a study which was covered by an Ortho Newsletter last

week which found that activity seemed to have no impact on the

longevity of a joint and therefore " restrictions " might not make any

difference.

That said, I think it depends on how much one runs -- the kind of

surface -- running versus jogging etc in terms of assessing the risk

-- and I do think it's an individual calculation. I was never much of

a runner - I am lucky enough to live right below Runyon Canyon so

walking to the top provides a pretty good cardio workout LOL -- I am

built for endurance rather than speed.

It's a shame that you can't go back to cycling since that's one of

the forms of exercise that is considered to be non-impact. Is there

any way you can work on regaining your ROM so that you can cycle again.

I do the Stairmaster as my exercise as I find it more convenient to

use cardio machines regularly. I slap on my iPOD, my ratty work out

clothing and don't have to worry about climate control.

I'm not a cyclist and no nothing about it, but in PT and according to my

rheumatologist, the seat should be higher than the pedals to protect my knees.

Is that something to consider?  Like I said, I'm way out of my league in the

cycling!

Thanks for that. I am despondent as I was a cyclist (Cat 1 full on) but can't

ride now as I have not got the bend in my knee (I have~90 deg) so I thought I

would try walking but didn't want to wear anything out! I feel I could run but I

don't want to damage anything - do you think I could?

Thanks

Bill, go back to therapy to see if you can get a better bend. But also do the

walking. I would not try running yet. Joan

If he got 120 in the OR, you are supposed to get that with therapy. And yes, it

hurts. I still force myself to bend it as much as I can every day that I do not

go to therapy where they cheerfully torture me. So press on, pun intended. Joan

Hi Donna, Yesterday I did at least 5 miles in Manhattan, between walking to the

subway, walking around MOMA, walking to dinner, and walking home. Not to

mention stairs!!!

Today I am surprising well - no major after effects at all, AND it is raining.

I may be approaching the corner! Joan

I would think that if you can do it and it feels good, then continue! I usually

put in at least 5 to 6 miles a day all total. And I am 63, but as a nurse, don't

have much choice since I am still working.I don't do more than a couple of miles

at once, though.

>

> I am walking at least 1 hour a day at a clip (not usual around the house,

shopping etc.) and my knee was done 12/09. As it has only been 4 1/2 months, I

do rest and elevate when I get back from the walk, but I feel this is the best

and least hurting exercise, after the stationary bike. However, that is a bit

boring, is it not? The aim is to get to 10,000 steps. That should take about 2

1/2 hours of steady walk. Try for it!
