Guest guest
Hi I will be going for TKR surgery on March 17 and yes I am very nervous about it. I have severe rheumatoid arthritis that is under reasonable control with meds. My surgeon has even said to me that I am quite young to be getting this done(46 yrs). My question to anyone here is the healing time about the same for people who have RA as opposed to people that don't? Misty
Guest guest
Hello Misty I had a THR on 5th Feb and I have RA - I'm also about the same age as you; I'm 48. I guess no one's experience is going to be the same, but I think I'm doing quite well for 6 weeks after the operation and it didn't cause any flare up of the RA. I have felt very tired in the first few weeks but I lost a lot of blood during surgery which hasn't helped. I'm sure everything will go well - good luck for the operation, I'll be thinking of you on 17th! Guest guest
I have had the best dr's look at them each dont know??? I am a nurse and i tore the cartilage in the knee on an injury,, they thought it was the meniscus when they 1st went in and found the cartilage was to damaged so they did microfracture,, drilling holes in the damages cartliage and trying to grow new cells, but off the leg completely 6 mths for me,, they waited a year until they found it had failed..which its sucsees rate is so so..some dr's dont recommend it because of its failure rating!! Then they did a partial knee replacement still pain even with al the therapy and pool therapy still failed ..they did a bone scan and it lit right up where my pain is,,, waitied a year again..The pain was always on the inner part of my knee and down the inner calf..So they went with a total revsion knee replacement thinking this would do it...NOPE had it done last june still in pain and can hardly walk ..i was walking better 5 mths ago then now..They are scatching thier heads and im ready to jump of the newport bridge lol lol...the pain and agony that i have been thru..Not all knee replacements are horror stories i have friends that did great..I think its because it was an injury not RA the cause..I go back to ortho on wensday..waiting for an mri on the hip since ive been also battling hip pain since the surgery...Which i found out its because my illotibial band is too tight when they reattached it at the surgery ..so i think they do a release but not looking forward to any more surgeries !!! Just make sre they know where and why your having the pain in the inner knee cause it could be nerve pain like me... i had both !! See a speciallists and ask lots of questions dont settle until you feel comfortable they know why you have this pain...hugs ________________________________ From: Banks <lindabandcompany@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Mon, March 15, 2010 9:37:06 PM Subject: Re: TKR surgery coming up fast Why do the replacements fail?? Guest guest
Kimberley have you tried Neurontin or Gabapentin for your nerve pain,? Mine was a burning sensation also, But I have used this drug for several years, and now my pain is minimal. Continued surgery can make nerve pain worse not better. mary.waspe@... Guest guest
Hi ,  Here's a link about nerve pain. http://www.theacpa.org/nerve/pdf/Final_Brochure.pdf  Who told you you have neuropathy? A rheumatologist or neurologist? Neuropathy is nerve pain and it's a real pain. My feet would go numb.I would also get burning sensations with the numbness.  There's a nerve in my upper left arm that would stab so badly, nothing I did relieved it.  It would get so severe that I often would start laughing along with tears. Sounds weird, but there it is.  My rheumy put me on Gabapentin, which has its side effects...but it handled my nerve pain. I went off it for a while and the pain returned like a freight train. My OS told me that that probably wasn't the best way to handle all the pain I was experiencing and encouraged me to restart it which I have and for now, the nerve pain has subsided.  I just met a man at PT today who had back surgery and post op developed nerve pain in his left thigh. His doc had prescribed the Gabapentin for him, so I'll check with him next week and see how he's doing.  I'd like to find an alternative to Gabapentin, so will keep researching. It's hard when you have arthritis, fibromyalgia, nerve pain and muscle problems to tease out what's what. I think you know what I mean!  Lynn THR 26 Oct 09 What other people think of me is none of my business! Terry Cole Whittaker Here's my art blog: http://www.adreamseyeview.blogspot.com/ From: kimberly houghton <bouncingtiggger> Subject: Re: [Total_Joint_ Replacement] TKR surgery coming up fast Total_Joint_ Replacement Date: Monday, March 15, 2010, 8:33 PM I am 46 also 3rd one others failed..But everyone heals differently adn each case is different each person heals differently and some people are more mobile than others and stronger quads..Work on the quads all the time and balance....pool helped alot...i mean a real lot and patience !!! I hope my recovery is uneventful and I can get back to driving as soon as possible as it is my right knee that is getting done. Guest guest
, I'm glad you brought up the advice about working on quad strengthening and balance. Balance is actually a big concern for me as I just had a triple fusion of my left foot on Mar.18/09 and still dealing with that as I still feel wobbly as my foot doesn't go side to side anymore. I'm really worried about how I'm going to do stairs as I literally won't have a good leg to stand on lol. I guess I'll find out soon enough what's going to happen.
