Guest guest
you poor thing, to try and reassure you, its actually quite hard to damage the joint if you fall. My friend tripped over a mat placed on a supermarket floor and went flying, she has had both knees done, but everything was fine, apart form her pride ?? I rarely wash the floors these days leaving it to hubby to do. x mary.waspe@... So, right now I am having a minor (I hope) setback. I misjudged the distance and tripped over a mop handle - it caught my left foot. I actually managed to relax and roll with the fall and my right hand and side took the impact. I must have tried to tighten my left leg muscles to catch myself because they are feeling sore and my left knee joint has become more swollen than it was previously. I'm not sure if I actually pivoted on my left leg or not. It happened too fast. The physical therapist looked at my knee today and seemed to think that there wasn't any significant damage. I see my orthopedic surgeon's physician assistant on Thursday, and I think that they are supposed to take x-rays at that visit anyway. So, probably everything will be fine. I'm just frustrated because my leg hurts and I can't do anything but passive stretching and simple exercises like the ones we all did in the hospital until it is better. <sigh> Just looking for a little sympathy....and warning everyone to avoid tripping over mops. ;-) ------------------------------------
Guest guest
That sounds terrifying. My doc said it wasn¹t possible to hurt my new knee. But muscles and all....oh those can hurt. So take care. A good soak with some Epsom salts might help any muscles that got pulled around. That an a lot of tender loving care and sympathy from strangers should help. Glad you have appointments set up to check things out though. Guest guest
I think tripping and falling is one of the biggest worries we all have. Just relax, massage and don't worry. It's good you have an appointment. It will ease your mind. Now is the time for pampering a bit. Guest guest
I have fallen MORE since my TKR than before - but mostly it was due to the unlevel ground I was walking on (stepped in a hole on more than one occasion). Fortunately, the ground did not cause any problem and I never fell directly on the new knee. Recently I did fall on pavement and sprained my ankle- fell directly on the new knee - but suffered no problem with the knee. The sprained ankle was on the other leg. Apparently the new bone growth attaching to the prosthesis is quite secure. RTKR - 9/16/09 OS: Coon, St. Helena, CA Re: Tripped over a mop and fell down this past weekend That sounds terrifying. Guest guest
My surgeon told me that there are sensors, nerves, in the natural knee that tell you where your joint is. He said, put your fingers behind your back, you can still know the relative position of each of them. However, the TKR removes these nerves. So, we¡¯re lacking one natural way of knowing where the knee is. This can contribute to falls if you¡¯re not extra-careful. Fortunately only seldom is any real damage done. Guest guest
Jackie You can't hurt the knee, but because the knee is so strong, you can hurt other parts of your body. I am currently wheel chair bound. 2 months ago I was in Mexico and slipped on wet tile in the B & B I was staying at. My foot on the TKR side slid off to the right. The weight of my body torqued the leg and I ended up with a broken Femur bone. The knee is fine, however I now have attached to my beautiful knee is a plate which goes nearly to my hip. I have never broken a bone before... The blessing in all of this is that I could have slipped in such a way that I landed on my head...I hate to think what could have happened. I am also fortunate to have such wonderful friends in my life. I have received so much help. I am not able to stay in my house, but a kind friend has opened her house to me.....and 3 of my dogs. Life is Good!!! Hugs, Jackie Re: Tripped over a mop and fell down this past weekend That sounds terrifying. Guest guest
I saw the PA at my surgeon's office today and they took x-rays of my knees and everything looked great. (the PA) told me that I just re-started or worsened the inflammation cycle when I fell and it should resolve with rest, elevation and ice. Evidently new knees are more sensitive to any kind of trauma. It's still pretty painful at times, but it is the muscles on the back of my leg that hurt the most. The knee swelling has gone down a lot. > > > > > > > > > > > > > Thanks to everyone who answered my question about side sleeping. > > > > So, right now I am having a minor (I hope) setback.
