Guest guest
Met with orthopedic surgeon and scheduled hip replacement surgery for June. I am a 62 year old woman and don't know anyone personally who has had a hip replacement. Is it possible to find a person or persons in this group whom I could ask the half dozen questions that I have about recovery? Thanks

Guest guest
I'm a teacher and in really good shape except for the hip. Since my bedroom is upstairs, should I try to move downstairs temporarily immediately after the surgery? Another concern I have is driving. The surgeon said no driving for 6 weeks (it is my right hip). Is there any wiggle room there? How have you coped with being basically confined to your home for six weeks? Thanks for any responses ________________________________ From: Lynn <lynnf_99@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Wed, April 7, 2010 6:33:46 PM Subject: Re: hip replacement scheduled I'm almost 61, had my left hip replaced in October. Guest guest
Hi Judy, People in this group answered a lot of my questions before and after my hip replacement. You will find good advice and input. If there are any questions I can answer, I would be happy to do so. My THR was January 26th and I will be 62 later on this month. All I can say is that it was one of the best things I ever did. Reen
Guest guest
Judy, Do you plan on going to a rehab after the hospital? The occupational and physical therapists will try to get you ready for living in your home. Do you have a lot of stairs to go to your bedroom? If you only have a few stairs, you may be able to use your own bedroom. I was able to walk with a cane after 8 days of rehab and walk up and down the four stairs that led into my yard. I live alone in the country & didn't have any problems staying by myself after the hospital/rehab stays, a total of 8 days. I did have a friend who came every afternoon to check on me. Another friend brought groceries, but I was well stocked up so did not need much.
Guest guest
I had a resurfacing last month, not a THR and not sure how recovery compares but I was driving 11 days post op (like tour my right leg was the operated leg). Only requirements were that I be getting around on only one crutch (this was just an indicator of leg strength) and off all narcotic pain meds. Less severe flexion restrictions with a resurfacing than a total hip though so that may play a role too. Good luck with your surgery. Guest guest
I've had both hips replaced. I went to PT the day after surgery while in the hospital. There was a staircase to practice on. I was able to go up and down with no problem when I had my right hip done, but not my left. That's because of my knees, not my hips. If you don't have hip problems, the chances are good that you'll be able to go upstairs to your bedroom to sleep. If your hospital stay includes PT you'll know for sure. My doctor released me to drive after three weeks, with both hips. That, too, was no problem. The biggest obstacle is getting in and out of the car! But I managed. I had the posterior approach. If you're having the anterior approach, you won't have restrictions on bending so getting in and out of the car would be much easier. Good luck! > > From: R <nancyr44fastmail (DOT) us> > Subject: Re: [Total_Joint_ Replacement] hip replacement scheduled > Total_Joint_ Replacement > Date: Wednesday, April 7, 2010, 9:27 PM > > I had my left hip replaced in July and the right in October. Guest guest
I'm 41 and also a teacher and had my THR 2.5 weeks ago. They had me up and around the day after surgery. Crutches on day 2. On day 3, we practiced stairs. (I live in a condo on the second floor) I did 30 stairs down and then came up them, too. It was pretty simple. My Dr. (I went to see him today) told me that I could drive as early as next week(as long as I'm comfortable) I haven't taking anything for the pain(just Tylenol)since Monday. Good luck!! > > > > From: R <nancyr44fastmail (DOT) us> > > Subject: Re: [Total_Joint_ Replacement] hip replacement scheduled > > Total_Joint_ Replacement > > Date: Wednesday, April 7, 2010, 9:27 PM > > > > I had my left hip replaced in July and the right in October.
