Most people don't feel it at all - Some people feel something going on

intermittently during the first year while it is " uniting " with the

bone but I never did.

Most people have no complications after the surgery and really

" forget " they have an artificial knee.

Hi Celeste,

I had LTHR 4 months ago.  I had some (not much) soreness mid thigh early on, but

it wasn't something that took me off my feet or needing pain meds.  I wouldn't

worry about that part.  Hope this helps.

I would like to know once someone has had a THR do you always feel the large

stem that goes down into the thigh bone? It looks like it would be very

uncomfortable.....?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Celeste,

I don't feel anything in the bones, but I do have residual nerve pain on the

skin. My left side of the knee is numb and often there is a nerve like pain in

the center of the area. I seem to be alone with this problem.

All the best, Joan

I agree. I have never felt anything relating to the stem. It's been a couple of

years and on most days I have to remind myself both hips have been replaced.

Every now and then I have a little pain, but I think that's just because I don't

get enough excercise and I strain ligaments. I was devestated when I was told

that both of my femurs had collapsed and I needed both hips replaced. I was in

so much pain I was considering taking my life. After my THRs, I have no pain. I

forget for weeks at a time that I was that desperate. The recovery from surgery

was a little bit painful, but nothing compared to everyday life before the

surgery. I did have a short period of mild depression after a couple of weeks,

but it passed. Today, and I'm being 100% honest, I don't feel any different than

I did before my hips collapsed. When you're told that you have to have your hips

replaced, it feels like being told you have cancer. But in most cases it is such

a non-event, you

wouldn't believe it. A walk in the park in almost all cases.

That is very inspiring! Yea, everyday I wake up since 12/10 & have a horror a

huge dread over me...hips are kind of like your infrastructure and needed! I

would agree...I feel like I have been told I have a horrific disease, which I

guess I do....and I feel like I will be a enstein when I get new non human

parts...it is overwhelming! I also scar badly I develop keiloids, I am not vein

and am over weight anyway but having 8 " keiloids running down both legs does not

enthuse me...I keep thinking of enstien!

enstein?  Methinks you need to get a different image going for you...like

one of better health!

I can't believe how awesome it is not to have that miserable pain...I still have

a little longer to go to recover as I have this goofy muscle disease which has

slowed down recovery, but even with it, I am over the moon to be healthier than

I have in ever so long!

Maybe I'll have to face it again in 10 years or so, but I'm going to make those

years wonderful!

And by the way, I was at the hospital today for my mammo, and the woman

registering me was in her early 30s and had 3 hip replacements (same hip) due to

a car accident when she was 19.  She's gone through 3 pregnancies in between the

3 hip replacements and she knows there's more down the road in her future, but

she said she's not doing crazy things like she did in her 20s to endanger her

hips, but she said life is good.

So, hopefully with all the information you've gotten today, you know the future

can be much happier and healthier.

Well here's a new image for you to think of: start thinking 'bionics' - 'The Six

Million Dollar Man', 'The Bionic Woman', 'Robocop' - not that I'm suggesting you

join the police force, but you get the picture!!! ;^)

I had both hips replaced. The one that was replaced two weeks ago hasn't given

me any pain in the area you are asking about. The second hip, one week ago, has

offered an occasional twinge if I put all my weight on it as in stepping down.

There are times, in certain positions when I feel aware of the stem, but

without pain. Whenever I feel this, I change position immediately. I guess

it's from taking a position that strains the juncture between the stem and

the bone, but I have no desire to find out for sure, thank you.

Yes, both done one week apart...but I had the Anterior approach to hip

replacement. No muscles were cut. I would never have considered doing so with

the more common Posterior approach.
