Before surgery, I took LOTS of naproxen (had to stop a month before surgery, however), cortisone injections, SynVisc injections, and a lot of hobbling. I wish I knew about Z-coil shoes at the time - it would have helped take the impact out of walking. Yes, mine were bone on bone, so the cortisone and synvisc didn't do much. The experience, while it wasn't a walk in the park, was certainly tolerable. It will be several months before you can really get around, and a year before you start feeling like you actually own the new knees. Yes, there was pain, but after surgery for me, the bones hurt less than before, even the day of surgery when they had me walk for the first time (might have been the good drugs helping out there!) I am extremely glad to have done it. Yes, I'd do it again. The quality of life has improved dramatically with the pain gone.
